A Bollywood soundtrack from the 80s generation – one that's got a style that definitely matches its decade! Tracks are long, upbeat, and joyous – in the best 70s Bollywood mode – but also feature more keyboards and drum machine rhythms, which creates this moodier quality in the music – a vibe that's maybe not dark in the way that Euro electro material might be, thanks to a few disco flourishes from time to time – but which definitely sets the whole thing apart from the classic Bollywood mode!

One of the first great Italian cop movies of the 70s – and a superbly-scored film with a really wonderful soundtrack! The DeAngelis brothers are clearly drawing heavily from an American tradition initiated by Lalo Schfrin – using heavy guitar, funky undercurrents, and even some soulfully righteous touches to really set this one apart from other Italian films of the time. Yet the approach here is also a bit more different, touches with some of the darker modes and more redemptive themes of Italian westerns – a sense of suspension and drama that's incredibly powerful, and heard to best effect on the solo instrumental passages – which include guitar by Maurizio and flute by Guido.

Andrew Wartts and The Gospel Storytellers - There Is A God Somewhere1982 (Champ Records)

One of those rare gospel albums that sounds nothing like conventional gospel – and which instead is a wonderful criss-crossing of soul, funk, and spirit – all guided by an artist who's as righteous as his message! The set was recorded in Nashville, and has a nicely laidback approach – with lead vocals from Andre Wartts, in a raspy style that almost owes a bit to Curtis Mayfield – especially in the way that Curtis could easily shift between the secular and spiritual, and always make the whole thing sound incredibly personal. Yet there's also some currents of jazz, some moments of funk, and a really collaborative approach to the album – as the Gospel Storytellers are clearly a very close-knit, intimate group – one who really come alive when some of the backup vocalists join Andre's lead.By Dusty

A great little fusion set from Airto – recorded in a mode that's a great bridge between his acoustic roots and some of his smoother albums in years to come! The sound has some key electric elements here – bits of bass, guitar, and keyboards – but there's still a strongly acoustic sound overall too, one that leaves plenty of room for Airto's unique jams on percussion, plus a bit of vocals from the lovely Flora Purim. Airto's got some top-shelf talents helping him out here – Billy Cobham on production, and Stanley Clarke and Milcho Leviev on arrangements – and there's a nice sense of darkness going on that even separates the album from some of Airto's other mid 70s sides on CTI.By Dusty
