This is a rare gem of a record from fantastic soul band "THE SOUL KIDS" stemming from the Democratic Republic of Congo, including covers of JAMES BROWN & The Mighty Flames' hit singles "Lickin Stick" (1968),"Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" (1965), WILSON PICKETT " Hey Jude" and a French vocal version of OTIS REDDING s' soul hit "Respect ".
This amazing young band, which released only four 7 inch singles and one album, is a great example of the influence of soul music and French pop bridging to the new Afro soul scene that the musicians of Kinshasa were involved in during the time of post-independence.
Ngoma was one of the first record labels intent on providing local artists' recordings from both sides of the Congo river to the people of the DRC and West Africa. Created in 1948 by a Greek man by the name of Nicolas Jeronimidis, the Ngoma label was active through 1968, pressed in France until 1971, with a tremendous catalogue, including this historical and essential soul masterpiece!  Nigeria had a unique music scene which began spreading rapidly in the 1970s. The era was based on unspoiled use of fuzz pedal, keyboards and indisputable influences of the Psychedelic Blues bands of the West. In 1980 Effi Duke & The Love Family came out with their debut Mr. Love. It was released by Homzy Records which was a home of many Afro-Funk records, going strong from mid '70s toward '80s. Effi Duke & The Love Family being one of their most energetic albums. The '80s were definitely more into a jazzy sound with disco slowly infiltrating the African music scene. What's so unique about Mr. Love is Effi Duke's love for guitar based Jazz and together with African rhythms and funky bass, his album is a Funk/Jazz/Disco hybrid. He's an incredible guitarist and also at the time of this LP an ex-Wings member. They were one of the most popular bands from Nigeria. Effi Duke was a key part of the scene with being member of The Wings, The Visitors, The Apostles, he played also the guitars on Mary Afi Usuah's fantastic second LP African Woman (which will be also rereleased on PMG) and on many other great albums including the incredible Folk 77 album.

Right in time for the midsummer comes the balearic porn disco soundtrack sex feverreleased by vinyl of austria group – vienna distributed by private records (berlin), . The original 1978 movie takes place on a tropical island and features german (bravo) teen idols bea fiedler and olivia pascal as main actors in a typical revealing sex & crime story.The score was written and composed by austrian producer gerhard heinz from vienna. This production is one of the most homogenous and multifaceted albums of heinz in existance. Strangely the score got never released and existed only as rumor in the soundtrack collector scene because of some smashing moroderish disco and disco earwigs which pop up several times during the movie. But also the psychedelic ambient long versions tempel, lokal and the afro track eingeborenen tanz are scoring.

Peter King ‎– Shango 2002 (Afro Strut)

Composer and multi-instrumentalist is a seminal yet under-recognized artist on the Nigerian music scene of the 1970s. Though he recorded nine albums in Africa, the U.S., and U.K., Shango is the only one currently available. Recorded in 1974, Peter King's Shango is a mixture of hard African rhythms, James Brown-styled funk, jazzed-up horn arrangements, and political messages.

From the standpoint of the Lagos scene, the album is a classic of the period rivaling virtually anything that Fela or Tony Allen were putting across at the time. With King blowing deep-groove soul and out jazz saxophone solos above the chants, the music becomes a boiling pot of hip-shaking sexiness and rage. King being a formally trained musician outside of Nigeria (one of the schools he attended was the Berklee College of Music), his conception of harmony is revolutionary as he strides blues, R&B, soul, post-bop jazz, whole-tone variations, and counterpoint to edgily shift the focus of each tune on the set -- note the sweet soul blowing on "Prisoner of Law" that becomes a big band extrapolation of seven shades in the key of C.

The title track choogles along, burning underneath with a series of percussive contrapuntal moves that accent a bassline already fragmenting under the power of the groove, and "Freedom Dance" takes the Brown ethic of overdriven funked-up brass aesthetics into territory that reflects both Eastern repetitive chanting and the gospel shout and roll of Ray Charles. There isn't a weak second here, not a maudlin note. Everything here is so deeply blue it's the brightest black you've ever heard.

Wicked sound library funk from the 70s – an album that was originally pressed on a tiny run of 300 copies, by the equally tiny Flipper sound library label! The style here is nice and spare – less of the orchestral funk of other records of this nature, and mostly focused on rhythms from electric bass and congas, with wah-wah guitar lines that riff up and down the groove! This approach is almost more organic and homemade than some of the slicker sound library sets of the period – with the feel of a small combo just coming up with sweet laidback jams in the studio – and titles include "Rockfolk", "Sambasound", "Bassbeat", "Afrotheme", "Percussion Blues", "Tumbasound", "Bossa Feeling", and "Slow In Rhythm".

This is one of these scarce albums from the era of discofunk and electronics which is based on an ever pulsating carpet of percussive rhythms and every once in a while features melodic yet rhythm oriented chants instead of the typical lead vocals that come with your average pop tunes. At least not at the beginning of the record. With the time more and more elements of the pop music of those days join together with the wild and hypnotic rhythmical patterns of black African origins. Around the middle of this album the rather melodic chants riding on the polyrhythmic base of congas, bongos, rattles and other sources of sound take a turn into a rather shamanic and ritualistic barking and yelling which conjures a simmering and smouldering atmosphere. This part of the album which switches off your mind with its primitive feel and repetitive structures discharges into the final section where lush disco pop and funk arrangements welcome you back in the western civilization. Utterly intoxicating melodies and fiery rhythms will make sure you float on a pink cloud through the place you're in while spinning this strange vinyl. The way it develops is surely unique and the fusion of Western pop and African ritual dances generates an over sexualized mood and a tension you can only relief by moving your body to the beat. The great thing with „Tumblack“ is that what we get to listen to is all handmade music by truly gifted musicians. We speak of nothing less but a late 70s dance music masterpiece that reaches so far beyond the average disco music.
