The Square Set was a 1960s rock band from Cape Town South Africa, known for their songs Silence is Golden (SA number 1 Hit (1967)) "Carol Corina" (SA number 10 hit (1968)), and "That's What I Want" (international number 1 hit in Brazil, Argentina, and Portugal (1971-1972)).
The band formed in March 1966 and was called Neville Whitmill and the Humans. Founder members Nol, Neville, Derek and Keith rehearsed daily for 6 months composing new songs and covers before contracting their first professional gig at the Clifton Hotel.

Nol Klinkhamer hailed from the Conservetoire of Music in Holland having a degree in Jazz played piano, organ and the vibraphone. Neville Whitmill a Soul singer from Cape Town had influences from Buddy Holly, Ray Charles, Ottis Redding, Marvin Gaye. Derek Marks from Cape Town enjoyed rock bass playing with influences from bands like The Beatles, Small faces, Dave Clark 5 and Keith Moffat from Cape Town also enjoy playing Rock music. During the rehearsal stage they landed a gig at the "Stables nite Club" in Church Street Cape Town which gave them a venue to hone and perfect their craft. The venue was usually packed to capacity to hear the band. At this time the band decided to record their music and in August 1966 met Ian Martin (recording engineer) and Lindsay du Plessis (owner) of A.V.S studios Bree Street CT. It was at this time that a name change was much needed. During a studio break the four got together to thrash out names and it was Nol Klinhamer who suggested "The Square Set".

The band combined soul vocals and jazz organ (with the Hammond organ growing in popularity at the time) with rock bass and drums. The Hammond sound can be heard on most of The Square Set songs.

The previously unreleased 'Silence Is Golden' had a makeover with Graham Beggs at the helm and was released on Gallos Continental label in or about March 1967. It reached number 1 on the Springbok radio charts around July 1967.This led to the release of the bands first full album, 'Silence Is Golden'.By Wikipedia

'That's What I Want', a song first recorded by UK group The Marauders in 1963, was also recorded by by The Ronnie Singer Sound, a Cape Town band Marks had previously worked with. The latter version was given to The Square Set to record. The song was changed to accommodate the lineup and added to the 'Silence Is Golden' album. This song was later released in South America on the Decca label and rose to number 1 in Brazil, Argentina 1971 and number 1 in Portugal in 1972.

James Brown At The Organ And His Orchestra - Devil's Hideaway / Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? 1965 (Smash)

Grits and Soul album finds James Brown in serious Ray Charles mode, drawing inspiration from Charles' big band and organ playing. The results are pure James Brown, of course; his personality has always been too strong to allow any one influence to achieve top billing. Like Brother Ray, the band is razor sharp, no doubt from the endless one-nighters, and the strong hand of their leader.

The jazz backgrounds of most of the players are in evidence here, especially on their steady if unspectacular take of Lee Morgan's "Sidewinder." Where they really shine is on "Grits," a slow, throbbing, burbling blues that continually threatens to boil over before simmering down. Guitarist Les Buie's tasteful solo acts as a counterpoint to the wild organ solo by Alvin "Fats" Gonder. James Brown also plays organ on Grits and Soul, but this solo seems almost refined when compared to Brown's individualistic take on the instrument. This is a strong representation of the band, including many of the players soon to be name-checked during the "Soul Brother Number One" career phase who are present here, including Bernard Odum, Maceo Parker, and his brother Melvin. "Grits & Soul" was also a slick way for Brown to sidestep his contractual obligations with King Records, as there are no vocals on this release.

Jack Hawkins And His Orchestra ‎– Everything Is Beautiful 1973 (Windmill)

1960s and 70s British dance bandleader from Portsmouth. His music focused on uptempo arrangements of American soul songs, mod dancers and poppy ballads, and at the time was categorised as 'Big Beat' (a form of 60s mod music not to be confused with the late 90s dance music of the same name). Thoughout the 60s Hawkins' band had widespread residencies at ballrooms in Portsmouth and around the country.
Hawkins and his Orchestra appeared in a sequence in the 1971 film Get Carter, set in a night club where they were playing. They also had numerous appearances on the BBC, broadcasting live on the radio for 'Swingalong'. and later featuring on television's 'Come Dancing'.

Μια από τις μεγαλύτερες εγγλέζικες instro sextet που έχει να επιδείξει η μουσική. Σχηματισμένοι στις αρχες των sixties στο Kent και με μέλη τους  Major West (τενόρο), ΑΙ Holmes (βαρύτονο και φλάουτο), Borrie Corneron (ηλεκτρικό πιάνο και όργανο), John St. John (κιθάρα), Wes Hunter (μπάσο) και Tony Newman (τύμπανο). Στο βιογραφικό τους δεν θα παραληφθούν συνοδείες σε concerts με ονόματα οπως αυτά των Brenda Lee, Cilia Black, Gene Vincent όπου ο τελευταίος ξετρελαμένος  τους  προτείνει vα τov ακολουθήσουν. Η παραμονή μαζί του, για περίπου δύο χρόνια, τous  ανδρώνει μουσικά . Σημαντική η γνωριμία τους με τους Beatles το 1962 στο Αμβούργο με αποτέλεσμα την ηχογράφηση κάποιων κομμα­τιών των Beatles υπό τους  χτύπους των τύμπα­νων του Tony Newman κάνοντας τον Ringo Star να αναρωτιέται πότε τα είχε παίξει.

Παρά πολλες ειναι η διασκευές που συγκαταλέγονταιι μεταξύ των τραγουδιών,παιγμένα σ' ένα beat classic tempo. Αξιζει να αναφερθεί η διασκευή στο κομμάτι του Little Richard, "Ready Teddy” όπου και εμφανίζονται μαζί στην κλασσική πια rocker ταινια "Don't Knock The Wall" με ονόματα οπως αυτά των  The Animals, Jerry Lee Lewis κ.ά. Η αλήθεια είναι ότι δεν μπορεις να ξεχωρίσεις κάποιο από τα κομμάτια του δίσκου που κυκλοφόρησε τον Ιούνιο του 1964 κάτω οπό την ετικέτα της EMI Columbia. Σίγουρα έχουν κερδίσει επάξία, μια θέση  πλάι στα καλύτερα instrumental combos σαν αυτά των Booker Τ & The  ΜG’s και The Ventures.

Little Stevie Wonder - Fingertips, Pt.1 / Fingertips - Pt 2 1963 (Tamla)

This was the first live recording to hit #1 in the US, and it has quite a story behind it. Stevie Wonder, just 12 years old, was part of a Motown package tour called "The Motortown Revue," and was thrilling crowds with his high-energy performances. On March 10, 1963, the Revue came to the Regal Theatre in Chicago, where Wonder's performance was recorded. On this night, he played a highly improvised version of his song "Fingertips," which went on for about 10 minutes as the crowd went absolutely nuts and the stage manager, concerned because the show was running late, tried to get him off so the next act could perform. Wonder fed off the crowd and kept going, even doing a little bit of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" on his harmonica. When Wonder ends the song (about 2:05 in), the band starts to clear the stage, and the band for the next act, The Marvelettes, hustles on. At this point, Wonder starts playing again, at which point you can hear the Marvelettes bass player Joe Swift ask "What key?" and the performance picks up again with a little encore played by at least some members of the new band.

Motown released the last 3 minutes of this performance as "Fingertips (Part 2)," as the B-side of a different performance of the first part of "Fingertips." Part 2 became the hit, and the single was quickly reissued with Part 2 as the A-side. The song spent 3 weeks at #1 in the summer of 1963 and launched Wonder to stardom.
An instrumental studio version of "Fingertips" was included on Wonder's first album, The Jazz Soul Of Little Stevie, in September, 1962. The song was written by the Motown writers Hank Cosby and Clarence Paul. This version of the song is much more mellow, jazzier and flute-heavy than the famous live version, which plays up the horns and harmonica.

Sonor Music Editions presents a reissue of The Cast Five's highly collectible Popsound N. 1, originally released in 1971 on Flirt Records, the Italian label responsible for Paese Sotto Inchiesta (1971) by Peymont/Braen and Underground Mood (1972). This is obscure library music by a studio group composed of Ernesto Nicelli, Stellio Subelli, and Pasquale Castiglione. Tons of psychedelic grooves, including those on "Diatomea" and "Gospel 71", and killer breakbeats on "Speedball Experience." Generally, the whole record features some of the best b-boy breaks to be found on a library LP. This reissue is pressed on 180-gram vinyl and housed in a heavy cardboard sleeve replicating the original edition. Limited to 500 copies.

The Travellers

Every now and then a band catches my ear that possess the magic ingredients of being able to create a following on two fronts; the Mod / 60s crowd and the more eloquent ear holes of music lovers who can distinguish between quality, original retro sounds and manufactured retro sounds.

The Travellers contain the correct authentic musical touches along with a vocalist who will draw comparisons to both Julie Driscoll and Grace Slick thanks to a deep, soulful style that is perfect for the Motowny.

Psyche sounds that they conjure up. So far two singles have surfaced the exquisite Summer With No Sun all Jefferson Airplane, late '60s with a modern edge. Listen for that fuzz guitar! It came out in late 20I2 on their own Lemoncake imprint, the same as the second single: the more soulful "Stay". Gemma Marchi's soaring vocals come to the front besides the piano keyboard, the flip is one of my favorite tracks by the band. The Julie Driscoll / Brian Auger style "Don't look For Me" with  its jazzier overtones. Heavy Soul magazine

4 Belgium Beat Dynamite.

The Pebbles (Belgium 60's) however were very popular  in Belgium, France, Italy ,Portugal and Spain (recordings in Spanish and Italian) .They had an excellent 'live' reputation. They shared the bill with Jimi Hendrix , The Nice , Pretty Things and Small Faces.Their albums are not on CD yet (except an awful re-recording with synth pop sound and an 'early singles' CD )
Pebbles - You Better Believe It (Antwerp - Barclay BE 60853 - 1967) 

Another band who did manage to release their music in 1968 was SWEET FEELING. This band from Liege had already made three pop-singles when they came up with the heavy BB King classic Rock Me Baby together with Treat Her Right (EMI Columbia DCB113). A fifth 7 should follow a year later, but unfortunately they did let them talk into recording two Beatles songs. In France, Rock, Me Baby only got upon a B-side (Germinal GE 45.015) with one of those Beatles tunes on A.
Sweet Feeling - Sherry Cherie (Brussels [Brabant] - EMI-Columbia DCB 140 - 1968)

 

Hailing from Liege in southern Belgium, the Tops released two 45's on classical label Arsis in 1972. This hypnotic psychedelic dance track is a sure winner on the dance floor and is ripe pickings for old Fat Boy Slim to sample , or to end up on some TV advert.

I Pyranas - Tanti Successi Per i Pyranas 1969 (RCA)

Original Italian pressing on RCA ARC label (ALPS 11014), from circa 1970. Seldom heard and obscure session from this cult group! I Pyranas were the Italian equivalent of, say, the Ivan Jullien big band and there is even speculation that the 2 were possibly involved in joint projects?!? The name Jullien appears as a writer on the label and this Lp includes Mohawks style hammond tunes, one of which is called Wake the Monster (complete with funky drum breaks on the intro) that is also the name given to a track on Ivan Jullien's Riviera No 1 Lp! Whatever, I Pyranas really were a funky bunch with a psych jazz / mod jazz sound, blasting horn section and they could also sing! Expect raw hammond solos / clipped funky guitar riffs / tuff drumming / groovy congas / psychedelic soul covers / funky mod tunes et al on here! Great stuff for DJs. (taken from ebay vinyl listings).

Ο πρώτος του δίσκος που κυκλοφόρησε στην Ιταλία το 1966 κάτω από την ετικέτα της Durium records. Αμερικάνος στην καταγωγή που οι συγκυρίες τον έκαναν να βρεθεί στη γείτονα χώρα στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του '60. Με την πενταμελή ορχήστρα του δημιουργούν το Sabbato Sera Νο1 (κυκλοφόρησε ακόμη με το ίδιο εξώφυλλο, τον ίδιο τίτλο και στην ίδια εταιρεία και Νο2).
Ο δίσκος μπαίνει με το "Stasera Mi Butto" κλασσική Ιταλική επιτυχία, που μαζί με τα Έ Lasciatemi Stare", "Dove Credi Di Antare" επιδιώκουν να γίνουν δημοφιλείς στην χώρα όπου εδρεύουν. Κοντά στη φωνή του (early) Tom Jones, με περισσότερα μαύρα στοιχεία, διασκευάζουν υπέροχα τα "The Beat Goes On", "Reach Out I'll Be There" και παίζουν με μοναδική ειρωνεία το "Don't Play That Song" που στηρίζεται στα riffs του "Stand By Me".
Και όλα αυτά έως την στιγμή που ακούγεται το "Can't Ask No More" που από μόνο του είναι αρκετό για να μας δημιουργήσει ένα bueno Sabato sera. Κυκλοφόρησε περίπου την ίδια εποχή και στην Ελλάδα από την Music Box.
