Karen Dalton – In My Own Time 1971 (Paramount Records)

Label : Paramount Records

Value :

The story of 60’s American cult folk singer Karen Dalton is riddled with salacious rumour and myth. A reclusive, difficult artist who never sang her own words, died a junkie, homeless and virtually unknown. The tragedy here is that in her time, her exquisitely masterful, achingly pained voice went largely unnoticed. It would take almost 30 years and the reminisces of an adoring Bob Dylan to bring her to our attention. Yet Karen’s intense, unvarnished voice was immortalised on two studio recordings, the final of which, In My Own Time, was released in 1971.

Jim Croce – You Don't Mess Around With Jim 1972 (ABC)

Label : ABC

Value :

The album was recorded over a three to four-week period for approximately $18,000, with most funding coming from the PolyGram Group in Baarn, the Netherlands, on the basis of hearing an 8-song demo tape assembled by production team Cashman & West. The deal with PolyGram was made after team attorney Phil Kurnit approached a contact within the record company who then had PolyGram executives listen to the demo tape. After having the finished album rejected by up to 40 record labels, Croce was signed to ABC Records after Cashman & West had a chance meeting with ABC promotion man Marty Kupps. Kupps urged label head Jay Lasker to sign Croce after hearing cuts from a cassette tape of the finished album.

The record spent 93 weeks on the charts, longer than any other Jim Croce album. Due to the strong performance of the posthumous single release "Time in a Bottle" (#1 pop, No. 1 AC), You Don't Mess Around with Jim was the best selling album in the U.S. for five weeks in early 1974. It was listed at No. 6 on the 1974 Cash Box year-end album charts. Two singles were originally released from the album in 1972: the title track (#8 pop) and "Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels)" (#17 pop).

Misha Panfilov Sound Combo - En Route 2017 (Fnr)

Label : Fnr

Value :

An incredible record from one of the hippest funky talents around -- an artist who can always match the rest of the deep funk scene for sharp-edged instrumentation -- but also serve up so many other musical elements as well! Misha Panlov has a way of blending core funky rhythms with lots of sonic surprises -- at a level that maybe hasn't been done this well since the sound library generation -- especially in the work of artists like Sven Libaek or Alan Hawkshaw! Misha himself plays guitars, organ, synth, bass, and handles lots of effects -- and the album also has some might cool vibes, flute, alto, and tenor as well! Yet it's probably the "effects" that make the whole thing come together -- weird spacey touches at some points, creating almost an otherworldly funk feel -- yet one that never loses its soulful core.

Analogy – Analogy 1972 (Dischi Produzioni Ventotto)

Label : Dischi Produzioni Ventotto

Value :

In 1968 German Martin Thurn (guitar) went to an international school in Varese (North Italy) where he founded a band named SONS OF GIOVE. Other members were Wolfgang Schoene, Thomas Schmidt (later PELL MELL) and Jutta Nienhaus. Renamed to JOICE (due to a misprint later YOICE) the band went on in 1970 with drummer Hermann-Jürgen Nienhaus (brother of Jutta) and Mauro Rattaggi (bass), the only italian member of the band. After a lot of gigs in the south of Swiss and North Italy they were able to buy some professional equipment and in 1971 JOICE got a contract with an italian label. During a festival in Arona a spontanous collaboration happened with keyboarder Nikola Pankoff whilst playing a free interpretation of Pink Floyd's "Atom Heart Mother". Pankoff became a band member afterwards. Their first release was the Single "Sold Out/God's Own Land", two songs written by Thurn. At the end of the year Rattaggi had to join the army and left the band. Schoene changed to the bass.

The recordings for their first LP started early 1972 in Milan and they finally renamed to ANALOGY corresponding to the title of their most important song. Soon some trouble occured about the sleeve pictures. The band wanted an artwork illustrated by Pankoff but the label demanded on some nude photos which had been taken for the former single production. Rattaggi was covered by the blue vertical bar which includes the band logo. The songs of their debut are gradually developed with a more psychedelic and experimental style provided with a dark atmosphere. ANALOGY's distinctions were Jutta Nienhaus' unique vocals, Thurn's and Pankoff's impressive instrumental skills on guitar and Hammond organ. In Italy the band now could reach some attention and appreciation. They played at a Rock festival in Rome with 30.000 spectators, appeared during some RAI radio sessions and could also be seen on TV. But ANALOGY remained practically unknown outside of Italy though.

Mildlife - Phase 2018 (Research Records)

Label : Research Records

Value :

Funky jazz, but with plenty of keyboards that really trip things out -- lots of long moogy runs that really make things sound great -- especially when they're balanced out by Fender Rhodes! These guys seem to start in the territory of 70s electric jazz -- especially the funkier sort -- but they're also open to some 80s modes too, and even seem to point at times towards the spacey instrumental keyboard club that would show up on the European scene at the end of the 70s! About half the record has vocals, but the keyboards seem to be the main attraction -- lined up nicely alongside guitar, bass, drums, and congas.
