A fantastic funky theme to the groovy film Kriminal – served up here with romping orchestrations that have the best sort of hip 60s Italian feel – mod and jerking in the groove, and with some very cool Hammond organ sounds in the middle.

Experiment in Terror.
As the grammatically befuddling title might allude, English is not Paul
Bryan's native tongue, in fact Bryan is a Brazillian folk songwriter
whose real name is Sergio Sa. He assumed this faux-Anglo alter ego as an
outlet for his English language recordings made in 1973, inspired by
British and American acts like The Beatles and Stevie Wonder. Given how
accustomed we might have become to recent Brazillian reissues focussing
on tropicalia or bossa nove, these compositions do strike you as
incredibly 'westernised' in their presentation: the kinds of rhythms
associated with indigenous latin American musics are all but absent from
Listen Of, instead the arrangements take on a Burt Bacharach-like
syrupy richness, with only smatterings of incredibly technical
Brazillian folk style guitar playing giving the game away on occasions.
Given the warmth and richness of the string arrangements and the
ballad-heavy tone of the writing, you might expect this album to be
somehow schmaltzy in tone, or in some way excessively sentimental. Far
from it though, Bryan comes across as incredibly genuine and heartfelt,
responsible for music that's as beautifully recorded as it is melodic
An incredible record from Bobby Blue Bland – and quite possibly the
greatest one he ever made! The set's got an amazing something special
that's unlike most other material of the time – a bit blues, but a lot
of soul too – still with some echoes of R&B in the jazzier charts
used for the backdrop, but presented with a rock-solid style that
definitely points the way towards many sounds and styles to come in the
60s. And although Bland recorded many of these tracks as separate
singles, there's a way they're put together here that makes the whole
thing sound completely marvelous together – a really well-conceived
track list that shows that Bobby's an even greater artist in the space
of a full record. The arrangements are perfect, and Bobby's rough
soulful voice is blended in this amazing way with killer horn
arrangements that are far more sophisticated than most stuff that ever
came after this, and which never get in the way, but only back up his
One of our favorite albums by Kenny Dorham – and a really different
session than his usual studio work! The album captures Kenny in a
relaxed live setting, with a bit more dirt on his horn than usual, and
some great gutsy players in the group, like Bobby Timmons, Sam Jones,
and JR Monterose.
Kenny Dorham - Round About Midnight At The Cafe Bohemia
Beautiful beautiful early work from Dave Pike – a cascading array of
vibes and piano – stretched out over some longer tracks that skip with a
lyrical and modal groove throughout! Dave's working here with a group
that includes Bill Evans on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Walter
Perkins on drums – and although his style is a bit more restrained than
on his later funk albums, it also proves to be a wonderful match for the
fluid colors of Evans' work on piano – as well as Perkins' light and
playful work on the drum kit. There's a simplicity here that's really
great – not as "over your head" as the Dave Pike Set of later years, and
with a gentle grace that shows what a keenly mature player Pike was,
even at this early age.

Formed in Bermuda in 1968, The Invaders are responsible for what is
arguably the most sought after piece of Island Funk in history, their
lone long player, 1970s Spacing Out. Full of funky breaks, Meters-esque
guitar work, and tripped out horn lines, Spacing Out is not simply
collectible because of its exotic locale, it is a stone funk classic
that holds its own against such luminaries of the genre as The Meters,
The JBs, and the Nite-Liters.

One of THE indie soul treasures of the 70s – a wickedly funky record
that blends together jazz, soul, and club – and which stands out with a
sound that's all its own! You may well know the tag "moods and grooves"
– as the record's had an influence on countless scenes, and has been
referenced by many artists over the years. But nothing beats this
original set, a sublime batch of electric grooves performed by a core
combo of electric keys, bass, and congas – augmented by sweetened
strings and some occasional chorus vocals – bad-stepping around the
grooves in a mostly-instrumental mode that rivals (if not betters) some
of the best funky soundtrack work of the decade!
A 70s New York classic – the first and best album by Eddie Drennon!
Eddie's got a unique sound that's part soul and part Latin – grooving
here in a Latin Hustle mode that brings together gliding strings,
floating chorus vocals, and a heavier funk-based set of rhythms that
really kicks up the groove! Club diva Esther Williams is one of the
singers in the group, and the mix of strings and funk is completely
sublime throughout! Great cuts include the heavily funky (and often
sampled) "Theme In Search", which has a very dark groove that we can't
get enough of, and the club classic "Do What You Gotta Do" – but there's
also loads of other nice ones, like "Let's Do It Again", "Please Stay
Please Stay", and "Get Down, Do The Latin Hustle"
Eddie Drennon & B.B.S. Unlimited – Do What You Gotta Do
Value American actress, novelist, singer and former model, who has lived
mostly in Britain and Ireland. She achieved national fame when she
appeared in London as Dionne in the long-running rock musical Hair. She enjoyed close relationships with Marc Bolan and Mick Jagger, who is the father of her only child Karis.
According to Hunt, The Rolling Stones' controversial hit song "Brown Sugar"
was based on her. She has written three novels, as well as three
volumes of autobiography, which include a frank account of life as a
breast cancer sufferer.
One of the most beautiful albums ever recorded by DC flutist Lloyd
McNeil – and one of the grooviest, too! Lloyd's work is always amazing –
stretched-out, spiritual, and filled with life – but this time around,
there's a definite groove to the record that's undeniable – an increased
sense of rhythm, yet one that's still extremely creative, especially in
the mellower moments – which are among some of the most compelling that
McNeil ever recorded. The tunes were originally scored for a dance
group, and feature a core combo with Lloyd on flute, some great Fender
Rhodes from Eugene Rush, and sublime bass and drum patterns – mixed with
some haunting added woodwinds, played by a combo that also features the
legendary Andrew White. The whole record has a beautifully rhythmic
quality, filled with throbbing, modal, soulful grooves – and tracks
include "Home Rule", "City Triptych", "2504 Cliffborne Pl", "Just 71%
Moor", and "Fountain In The Circle".
The Lloyd McNeill Quartet - 2504 cliffbourne place
A seminal bit of spiritual jazz from the American scene – the first
self-released album by flute player Lloyd McNeill, a tremendous little
set that's filled with modal grooves and soaring sounds! McNeill's
flute work alone is enough to make the record great – in a space that's
somewhere right up there with Bobbi Humprhey or Roland Kirk for sheer
soulfulness – but the rhythms of the record are sublime as well – killer
grooves that come from the piano of Gene Russ, the bass of Steve
Novosel, the percussion of Eric Gravatt, and Latin percussion of Paul
Hawkins! The tunes all have a flowing, organic quality that's
completely wonderful – extremely natural in approach, with a
seductiveness that's made the set one of our favorites for years – a
stone classic all the way through, with cuts that include "As A Matter
Of Fact", "Asha", "St Margaret's Church", "Effervescence", "Warmth Of A
Sunny Day", and "Two Third's Pleasure".
