Here we go and check some rather fresh band : I FENOMENI, formed in 2010 in Italy with the intention to create the dirtiest and most fuzzed out garage beat ever. Dirty guitar sounds and cheesy Farfisa organ lines on a solid and straightly pushing rhythmical substraction with some melodic vocals sung in Italian language are the ingredients of a joy – and colorful record that feels like a lost gem from not later than 1967. Nobody could tell this was first released in 2013 and reissued right now. Sound, interplay, melodies and spirit speak of smoky clubs with swirls of colors ornamenting the walls and acid drenched drinks being served by topless waitresses in short skirts.
You find yourself back in the mid sixties when it all began and the music here brings to mind tons of popular acts from that era. Starting with the early BYRDS, moving along to the US underground heroes such as THE SEEDS, THE STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK, THE THIRD BARDO or the later ANIMALS and psyched out JEFFERSON AIRPLANE stuff. If you look for innovations, please stop reading and grab some modern progressive rock for your own joy but if you want to be swallowed into a tunnel of sounds and colors where you can trip easy and free, this is yours. Despite the rather short length of these acid garage beat tunes you will leave what people call reality for a while. Everything here just grabs my soul and melts it away. Memorable melodies, moody riffs and those simmering fuzzed out lead guitars get me lose my senses.
This is definitely addictive stuff. If you are a fan of current acid rock like BABY WOODROSE you will not only dig but definitely worship I FENOMENI. The language is rather not important in this context as the voice alone is commanding and you understand the message without understanding the language. Beautiful and haunting. Η Marie Rotrova (σήμερα θεωρείται κάτι σαν την δική μας Χάρις Αλεξίου) ήταν μόλις 21 ετών όταν αναδείχτηκε από ένα διαγωνισμό ταλέντων. Λίγο αργότερα εμφανίστηκε σε ένα τηλεοπτικό show στην Πράγα, το οποίο της έδωσε την ευκαιρία να τραγουδήσει στο κορυφαίο Night club του ξενοδοχείου Yalta. Όταν έγινε μέλος των Flamingo Group το 1969 είχε πλέον επιρροές από Aretha Franklin, Carla Thomas, Fontella Bass και άλλες ντίβες της Soul Blues μουσικής σκηνής.

Big Crown Records is proud to present the reissue of this uber rare underground cult classic Running The Mardi Gras by Boco. Those lucky enough to find an original copy are paying upwards of $1000.00 for this truly unique psych rock / funk gem on 45.
From the title to the sound to the cryptic lyrics “Running the Mardi Gras” seems to confirm all the mystique that surrounds the southern Louisiana Bayous and Cajun culture. This record is a family affair. It started one morning when one Mr. Latour, the father of the group, was shaving in the mirror and a song struck him. It was to be about Mardi Gras, not the beaded revelry of New Orleans familiar to most, but the traditions of rural Louisiana, where one would “run the Mardi Gras,” going house to house getting home cooking from the neighbors. He would sing the song every day in the car and the children of the family soaked up the spirit of the song.

Playing and performing was just part of life for the family. Mr. Latour had bought studio equipment for his children to record on, which he kept in their house. Growing up in the shadow of New Orleans, the Latour children listened to the sounds of Funk and R&B that came in on the radio, which was the biggest influence on the family projects’ sound. Together the four Latour children, with the eponymous Boco Latour on lead vocals, and a couple of local musicians recorded “Running the Mardi Gras” in the Latour home. Feeling that they really had something, the makeshift band decided to record a b-side. The guitarist had a song he had been working on and they recorded what would become “Smile” as well. The two songs were pressed under the Laughing Eye label, nothing more than the heading under which the Latour family released their music, and mostly sold the 45 at gigs around southern Louisiana. The recorded output under Laughing Eye was understandably limited, but locals still remember well Boco’s powerful voice from her shows in clubs around the bayous. Boco and George Latour still live around Baton Rouge and continue to make music and play in the area.By David Haffner

Zdenka Kovacicek has a completely different way of phrasing than most other European singers we've heard – all these weird twists, turns, and sharp little angles that are a perfect fit for the quirky styles of the backings – which begin in a mode that's clearly trying to emulate American soul of the time, but which also moves into some weirder, more unusual territory too! There's a few mellower cuts that have some nice Fender Rhodes – and some other icy keyboards, too – and titles include "Necu Da Znam", "Dragi Mi Je Lijep K'O Slika", "Mali Crnit Brat", "Kobra", "Elektra", "Muzika", and "Hello Mr Elton John".

Doc Severinsen ‎- DJ Harvey Edits 2015 (Pacific Beach Recording Company)

Back in 2009, DJ Harvey came knockin' at PBRC HQ to deliver a special project he had in mind. Having a long and healthy relationship with the dudes at Pacific Beach, Harv essentially produced a couple of edits that could've well been next in line on his revered Black Cock label. Eventually released in 2010, the 12" cuts caused a stir as some will recall. Doc Severinsen is an accomplished American jazz/pop trumpet player, and as a band leader gained considerable notoriety on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Like most musicians in the 70's, Doc took his shot at the disco and funk sounds of the time, gathered stellar musicians, and released impeccably sounding works.
Two of these cuts, 'Be With You' and 'Shine On Me' are featured on this release. Harvey's unfailing magic touch has yielded two DJ-friendly edits with a lot of punch and galactic energy, yet with a velvet undertone. Staying true to the mission, the label took great care throughout the production process in order to preserve the quality of the original recordings.Proprietary equipment was created to transfer the original cuts from the source.
The mastering was conducted at Bernie Grundman in Hollywood, CA, known for its work on the greatest albums of all time, such as Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' and Steely Dan's 'Aja'.
The 2015 edition is noticeably different on the exterior. The cover art, having been designed by Harvey back in 2009 for the original release, commands attention.
At the time, however, the prevailing design had been already put into play leaving these amazing creative elements put aside for a later time - and so here we are.By deejay.de

Sweet soul from the Hawaii scene of the 70s – a surprisingly strong source of well-crafted, warmly-produced grooves – all with a special sort of sparkle that reminds us a lot of the best Bay Area or LA sounds of the time! There's a sunny vibe to the music that really belies its roots – a blend of jazz, soul, funk, and more – all handled with production that's few notches down from the slicker AOR material of the period, which still lets all the more soulful currents shine through nicely – and which keeps all this stuff from ever sounding too commercial. Given the cultural cross-currents taking place on the islands at the time, there's a surprising mix of backgrounds to some of these groups – which results in a unique sound that's nicely colorblind, and which stands as a bit of a contrast to some of the more defined scenes on the mainland.

The P&P reissue-a-thon continues this week as we're treated to another pair of long out of press pearls from the classic New York imprint. One of the most powerful disco cuts from the P&P Affiliate 'Land of Hits' Label, "New York’s Movin’" is faithful to the name. A seven minute-plus disco gem of percussive breakdowns, a solid bass groove, classic strings, and enough guitar licks to make Nile Rodgers rip out his trademark hair with jealousy. Ahzz was a studio project by Osborne Hunter and Steve Boston and despite the backlash of Comiskey Park’s Disco Demolition in 1979 and the commercialization of Disco, it was clear New York City was still movin’ in '81. Underground hits like these were just undeniable, filling the floor at The Saint, Paradise Garage and Mancuso's Loft parties. Like a lot of the titles on Peter Brown’s labels, today "New York’ Movin’" is a rare and highly sought after record, even a holy grail for some.

This is one of these scarce albums from the era of discofunk and electronics which is based on an ever pulsating carpet of percussive rhythms and every once in a while features melodic yet rhythm oriented chants instead of the typical lead vocals that come with your average pop tunes. At least not at the beginning of the record. With the time more and more elements of the pop music of those days join together with the wild and hypnotic rhythmical patterns of black African origins. Around the middle of this album the rather melodic chants riding on the polyrhythmic base of congas, bongos, rattles and other sources of sound take a turn into a rather shamanic and ritualistic barking and yelling which conjures a simmering and smouldering atmosphere. This part of the album which switches off your mind with its primitive feel and repetitive structures discharges into the final section where lush disco pop and funk arrangements welcome you back in the western civilization. Utterly intoxicating melodies and fiery rhythms will make sure you float on a pink cloud through the place you're in while spinning this strange vinyl. Dharmatama is a 1975 Hindi movie and the first Bollywood film to be shot in Afghanistan. It was produced and directed by Feroz Khan. The movie is the first attempt in India to localise The Godfather. The title character was based on matka (form of Indian gambling) king Ratan Khatri. It is said that Khan sat down with Khatri to learn more about him and understand the nuances of matka. The cast includes Feroz Khan, Hema Malini, Rekha, Premnath, Imtiaz Khan, Danny Denzongpa, Farida Jalal, Ranjeet, Helen, Madan Puri, Jeevan, Iftekhar and Dara Singh, satyen kappu and sudhir. The music is by Kalyanji & Anandji (are an Indian composer duo). This film took Feroz Khan to new heights in his career as this was a blockbuster movie. The same year, Sholay and Deewar were released. The film is also its scenes featuring Buzkashi a Central Asian sport on horses, including aerial shots, which in turn won film's cinematographer, Kamal Bose, Filmfare Award for Best Cinematographer.

Ξεκίνησε τις σπουδές του από το Ωδείο Αθηνών και εν συνεχεία από το 1957 μαθήτευσε στην Ανώτατη Μουσική Σχολή του Μονάχου δίπλα στους Καρλ Ορφ και Γκέντσμερ.[1].  Οι αρχικές του αναζητήσεις αφορούσαν στην ανανέωση του ηχοχρώματος και τις δομικές και ρυθμικές σχέσεις που βασίζονται σε αριθμητικές αναλογίες, τόσο με βάση τα δυτικά πρότυπα, όσο και με αναφορές στη δημοτική μας μουσική, κυρίως της ιδιαίτερης πατρίδας του. Συνέπεια αυτής της αναζήτησης ήταν η χρήση στα έργα του διαφόρων δημοτικών οργάνων (κρητική λύρα, σαντούρι, κ.ά.) ή αντίθετα η χρήση και μόνο της ηχητικότητάς τους χωρίς αυτά καθ' εαυτά τα όργανα.

Από τα γνωστότερα έργα του είναι: Αναρχία για κρουστά και ορχήστρα, Σενάριο για δύο αυτοσχέδιους τεχνοκρίτες για ενόργανο σύνολο, ταινία και σκηνική δράση, Παραστάσεις για φλάουτο, φωνή και σκηνική δράση, Μουσική για τέσσερεις πρωταγωνιστές, Κασσάνδρα, Ερωτόκριτος, μουσική για τον Πλούτο του Αριστοφάνη, Τριττύς, Τετρακτύς, Εγκώμιο στο Ν. Σκαλκώτα και πρόσφατα, η σύγχρονη όπερα Οδύσσεια (βασισμένη στο ομώνυμο έπος του Νίκου Καζαντζάκη.

Έγραψε μουσική για τον ελληνικό κινηματογράφο, όπως: Η δασκάλα με τα ξανθά μαλλιά, Η νεράιδα και το παλικάρι, Η αρχόντισσα και ο αλήτης (όλες του Ντίνου Δημόπουλου), Λούφα και παραλλαγή, Άρπα-κόλλα, Βίος και Πολιτεία (του Νίκου Περάκη), Η λεωφόρος του μίσους (του Νίκου Φώσκολου) και πολλά άλλα. Τον Απρίλιο 1997 παρουσίασε στο Μέγαρο Μουσικής Αθηνών το τρίπρακτο λυρικό έργο του «Όπερα των σκιών» (εμπνευσμένο από το θέατρο σκιών) σε λιμπρέτο του Νάσου Θεοφίλου. Εδώ ένα απ τα ωραιότερα του soundtrack. H "Μια Ιταλίδα απ την Κυψέλη" με την εξαιρετική αλλά και χαρακτηριστική του λαϊκό-bossa nova "Σκληρό μου Αγόρι" σε στίχους Ντίνου Δημόπουλου.

Carlton Basco ‎– Getting In Deeper / Don't Chain My Soul 1971 ( Freedom Records)

 

O Carlton Basco γεννήθηκε στη Λουιζιάνα το 1944 και πέθανε στις αρχές του 2004. Tο “Don't chain my soul” είχε κοπεί στο δικό του στούντιο το 71 καθως και στη δική του εταιρία «Freedom Records". Τα πρώτα αντίτυπα που κυκλοφορήσαν ήταν λίγα και αυτό οδήγησε μια ευπρόσδεκτη επανέκδοση πριν από μερικά χρόνια στην ετικέτα «Tramp" (αν κοιτάξετε τις δύο ετικέτες είναι σχεδόν πανομοιότυπες, εκτός από το όνομα).

Tο “Don't chain my soul” είναι ένα βαρύ funk. Τα τύμπανα και το Hammond οργιάζουν κάνοντας το biggest dance floor destroyers. Πιθανώς ένα απ τα καλύτερα funk 45's που ηχογράφησε ποτέ λευκή μπάντα!!So turn up the volume and get ready to boogie!!

Ναι, υπήρχαν τέτοιες μπάντες στην Ελλάδα. Τα κομμάτια ηχογραφήθηκαν μεταξύ 1987 και 1990. Ανέκδοτο τρίτο album των Jack Of All Trades. Ό,τι και να πω θα μεροληπτήσω.

Οι Universe217 πραγματοποίησαν το δισκογραφικό τους ντεμπούτο το 2007 με το ομώνυμο άλμπουμ τους. Μια μπάντα που κινείται στον χώρο του doοm metal με αρκετά ψυχεδελικά ξεσπάσματα. Η φωνάρα της Τάνιας αλλά και τα συμπαγή (άρτια τεχνικά) παιξίματα της μπάντας είναι εντυπωσιακά. Το «Ministry» είναι ένα κομμάτι που προμηνύει βαρυχειμωνιά ελπίζοντας σε κάποιες ηλιόλουστες μέρες.

Για τους Porcupine Tree δεν χρειάζεται να πω κάτι. Το «Deadwing» κυκλοφόρησε το 2005 και είναι απ” τους τελευταίους τους δίσκους. Μέσα στις 15 versions ξεχωρίζουν αυτή με το κόκκινο βινύλιο, που η αξία της ξεπερνά τα 1500 ευρώ, για να ακολουθήσει αυτή με το μπλε βινύλιο όπου η τιμή του δίσκου φτάνει και τα 600 ευρώ. Το «Lazarus» είναι το κομμάτι που ακούς μέσα στο αυτοκίνητό σου πηγαίνοντας ταξίδι ενώ έχει αρχίσει να ψιλοβρέχει.
