After the release of The Good Book in early 1971, Melanie Safka and her producer (and then husband) Peter Schekeryk left Buddah Records to form their own label, Neighborhood Records, and the new freedom seemed to do her a world of good -- Gather Me, released later the same year, is one of her most accomplished and confident albums, a set that allowed Melanie the room to indulge her lyrical obsessions while Schekeryk created superb musical accompaniment from her simple but forceful melodies. The epochal "Ring the Living Bell" is a pocket suite that takes a skeletal lyrical conceit and gives it flight through sheer belief while Schekeryk's arrangement, reinforced with gospel style vocal backing, makes this accomplishment all the more impressive. "Railroad," "Little Bit of Me," and "Steppin'" display a lyrical maturity and subtle strength that marked a real step forward for Melanie as a songwriter, and "Some Say (I Got Devil)" is an emotionally devastating tale of a pregnant teenager who clearly has no idea what she should do. Melanie's habit of overplaying her hand as a vocalist is thankfully in retreat on Gather Me, which finds her in full control of her instrument and communicating a wide palette of emotions without becoming melodramatic. And if "Brand New Key" comes across like a silly novelty tune in this context, it's a playful and engaging one, and Melanie sounds like she's having fun putting Freudian symbolism within the grasp of AM radio. Gather Me may well be Melanie's finest album, capturing her at the height of her skills as a writer and singer, and it has stood the test of time better than the majority of her work.

Γεννήθηκε στις 31 Αυγούστου του 1945 στο Μπέλφαστ της Ιρλανδίας και ήταν γόνος οικογένειας που είχε παράδοση στα blues. Εγκατέλειψε το σχολείο στα 15 του για να φτιάξει τους Them, με τους οποίους στα 19 του είχε την πρώτη μεγάλη ειτιτυχία με το "Gloria", ένα από τα σημαντικό­τερα τραγούδια του λευκού r&b. Πιστοποιώντας ήδη από τότε τα χαρακτηριστικά που τον έκαναν το cult αίνιγμα που είναι σήμερα, ο Van Morrison από την πρώτη στιγμή φάνηκε να εμφυσεί τον ποιητικό λυρισμό των στίχων του σε blues, jazz, rock n roll και κέλτικους παραδοσιακούς ρυθ­μούς με ευαίσθητα, γλυκόπικρα τραγούδια που έχουν την αύρα του κλασικού. Η βραχνή φωνή του με το ερμηνευτικό εύρος, την εκφραστικότη­τα και την ορμή της τίμησε το είδος όσο και αυτή του Eric Burdon.
To 1967 άφησε τους δημοφιλείς Them για να ακο­λουθήσει σόλο καριέρα, στα πλαίσια της οποίας κυκλοφόρησε τα άλμπουμ "Astral Weeks" (1968), "Moondance" (1970), "Common One" (1980) και αργότερα τα "Poetic Champions Compose" (1987), "Avalon Sunset" (1989) και "Enlightenment" (1990). Αλλά και σε νεότερες κυκλοφορίες του, όπως το "The Healing Game" (1997), το "Back On Top" (1999) και το "What's Wrong With This Picture?" (2003), ο Ιρλανδός καλλιτέχνης φάνηκε να διανύει την πλέον ώριμη φάση της καριέρας του, βγαίνοντας κερδισμένος από τις δημιουργι­κές διαδρομές και τις αναμετρήσεις δεκαετιών και φανερά ανανεωμένος τόσο συναισθηματικά όσο και μουσικά. Το 2005 ακολούθησε το "Magic Time", μια επιστροφή στις blues και soul ρίζες των πρώτων ημερών και το 2006 το "Pay The Devil" ένα αφιέρωμα στην country.

Οπαδός της παράδοσης αλλά και νεωτεριστής, σταθερός αλλά ποτέ επακριβώς προβλέψιμος, μύστης και επιστήθιος φίλος, ο Morrison παρουσιά­ζει στη μουσική του καραβοτσακισμένα blues, βελούδινη pop, υποβλητική soul, jazz περίπατους, σφιχταγκαλιάζοντας στίχους που έχουν από μόνοι τους λογοτεχνική αξία. Για πενηντα σχεδόν χρό­νια παραμένει ένας από τους πιο επιδραστικούς μουσικούς, όχι μόνο για τη μουσική της πατρίδας του, της Ιρλανδίας, αλλά και για τη διεθνή jazz και rock σκηνή.

Ο Chet Powers, όπως ήταν το πραγματικό του όνομα, είναι πιο γνωστός ως Dino Valenti ή Valente και ως τραγουδιστής και βασικός τραγουδοποιός σε δύο δίσκους των Quicksilver Messenger Service. Πριν κάνει όμως αυτούς τους δύο δίσκους, είχε ηχογραφήσει πρώτα τον μοναδικό προσωπικό το δίσκο, που είχε σαν τίτλο το ψευδώνυμο του. Έχοντας ήδη μια επιτυχία στο ενεργητικό του, το Let’s Get Together, από τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του ’60, και έχοντας αποκτήσει τη φήμη ενός μαγευτικού performer, η εταιρεία Epic τον προορίζει για το νέο της αστέρι και ως εκ τούτου του διαθέτει ένα ιδιαίτερα υψηλό ποσό, ακόμα και για τα δεδομένα της εποχής, για τις ηχογραφήσεις του πρώτου του άλμπουμ. Αφού ολοκληρωθεί το πρώτο τραγούδι, το Tomorrow, ο Velente αποφασίζει ότι δεν του ταιριάζει ο «πολιτικά ορθός» ήχος και επιλέγει να ενορχηστρώσει μόνος του τα τραγούδια, χρησιμοποιώντας κυρίως το ιδιόμορφο παίξιμό του στη δωδεκάχορδη κιθάρα.

Αυτή η απόφαση, σε συνδυασμό με τη σπουδαία φωνή που διαθέτει, οδηγεί στη δημιουργία ενός προσωπικού ήχου και ενός δίσκου που δεν έχει πραγματικά όμοιό του. Μεγαλωμένος σε οικογένεια Αμερικανών - τσιγγάνων που περιόδευαν με τσίρκο, ο Valente γνωρίζει από παιδί το ρατσισμό και χτίζει μια ανεξάρτητη προσωπικότητα και μια θυμοσοφία βασισμένη κυρίως στην εμπειρία αλλά και την ευφυΐα του. Σε αυτόν τον μοναδικό απόλυτα προσωπικό του δίσκο περιλαμβάνονται λοιπόν κάποια τραγούδια οι στίχοι των οποίων κυριολεκτικά «σπάνε κόκαλα». 

Τραγουδάει στο Children Of The Sun: «Συμβαδίζεις με όσα βλέπεις τριγύρω σου, κι όμως το νοιώθεις ότι δεν είσαι ελεύθερος. Λες “Φυσικά είμαι μόνο ένας άνθρωπος. Αν δεν μπορούν να αλλάξουν τα πράγματα οι πολλοί, τότε κανένας δε μπορεί να τα αλλάξει μόνος του”. Κι όμως θα έπρεπε να σου είναι ξεκάθαρο ότι Αυτοί είναι Αυτοί κι Εμείς είμαστε Εμείς, και δε σου είπε κανείς πόσο πολύ σε χρειαζόμαστε; / Έλα μακριά, πάρε τα ηνία, μάθε ότι είσαι νόηση. Richie Havens ‎– Something Else Again 1968 (Verve Forecast)

Ένας από τους ελάχιστους μαύρους που ενεπλάκησαν στην αναβίωση της folk τη δεκαετία του '60 ήταν ο Richard Pierce Havens. Γεννήθηκε στις 21 Ιανουαρίου του 1941 στο γκέτο του Bedford Stuyvesant στο Μπρούκλιν, όπου ύστερα από παρότρυνση του πιανίστα πατέρα του έπαιξε με τους McCrea Gospel Singers σε ηλικία δεκατεσσάρων ετών.

Λόγω όμως οικονομικών δυσκολιών μετακόμισε το 1962 στο Γκρίνουιτς Βίλατζ, όπου εξασφάλιζε τα προς το ζην ζωγραφίζοντας πορτρέτα τουριστών.

Η ευχάριστη όμως αναστάτωση που  προκαλούσε η μουσική σε εκείνο τον τόπο έκανε τον Havens να πιάσει και πάλι την κιθάρα του και να τραγουδά αρχικά στους δρόμους και στη συνέχεια σε διάφορα κλαμπ, όπως τα Cafe Wha?, Gerdes και The Fat Black Pussycat. Η βαθιά ζεστή φωνή του, αλλά και ο τρόπος που ακουγόταν η αντισυμβατικά κουρντισμένη κιθάρα του είχαν ως αποτέλεσμα ένα συμβόλαιο με την τοπικού βεληνεκούς δισκογραφική εταιρεία Douglas στην οποία κυκλοφόρησαν οι δύο πρώτοι δίσκοι του. Ακολούθησαν το συμβόλαιο με τη Verve και η αρχή μιας επιτυχημένης πορείας με το "Mixed Bag" (1967), που δήλωνε απερίφραστα την αγάπη του για τη μουσική του Bob Dylan και των Beatles. Ο Havens αντιλήφθηκε εγκαίρως ότι το κοινό υποδεχόταν θερμότερα τις διασκευές του, παρά τις δικές του συνθέσεις, γι' αυτό απέτισε φόρο τιμής σε πολλούς άλλους, όπως οι Sam Cooke, Donovan, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Marvin Gaye, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Jackson Brown, Van Morrison και Bob Seger, δρέποντας τις ανάλογες δάφνες.

Απέκτησε επίσης πολύ καλή φήμη και για τις ζωντανές εμφανίσεις του, με αποκορύφωμα αυτή στο Woodstock, που σήμανε την απαρχή της εμπορικής του επιτυχίας με τον εκτο δίσκο του "Alarm Clock" (1970).

Πέθανε στις 22 Απριλίου του 2013 απο καρδια.

Shawn Phillips - Second Contribution 1970 (A&M Records)

On this startling, ever-shifting, album-length musical landscape, Shawn Phillips carries listeners across folk ("The Ballad of Casey Deiss") and rock styles, with a heavy R&B feel at times ("Song for Mr. C"), accompanied by a band and Paul Buckmaster's most restrained orchestrations. The first four songs spin out seamlessly, like a cross-genre Sgt. Pepper's, and the album never lets up, driven by Phillips' guitars and his guileless singing. Some of the titles, like "Song for Sagittarians," seem dated, but even that number has some great hooks and a catchy chorus. Curiously, the promise of the album cover, depicting Phillips solo with an acoustic Gibson 12-string, is fulfilled on the final track, "Steel Eyes," on which he sounds like a more soulful successor to his one-time collaborator Donovan.

Song Of A Gypsy may well be one of the best self-issued psych sets from the American underground – a really well-written, well-recorded record that has a very dark personal vision – an approach to the music that's instantly unique, and which shows that digging for rare psych albums can really yield the occasional gem that stands head and shoulders with the bigger names of the time! Damon's voice is darkly spooky, and couched with these cool flanged-out guitar lines on the sides – creating a space that's very personal, and which seems to let the lyrics hit these qualities that go much deeper than usual.

The Gentle Soul - The Gentle Soul 1968 (Epic)

The Gentle Soul's sole album is suffused with pretty and wistful folk-rock tunes, deftly produced by Terry Melcher to incorporate dreamy orchestral instrumentation -- harpsichord, flute, and cello -- while retaining an understated subtlety. If you like the Stone Poneys, who made similar material in the late 1960s, there's no way you're not going to like this album. If you're sitting on the fence after that conditional recommendation, it might be too mellow for your tastes. If you want to know how exactly it might differ from the Stone Poneys, it's a little more on the soft-rock side, and definitely heavier on the male-female harmonies. All of which might be underselling the record, which is pretty attractive, though not astounding, on its own terms.

That's probably Ry Cooder making his presence felt on the gutsiest and bluesiest tunes, "Young Man Blue" and "Reelin'," both of which feature excellent acoustic slide guitar. Although Pamela Polland and Rick Stanley sing and write well together, it's Polland whose personality comes through stronger, particularly as she takes the occasional unharmonized lead vocal and is the sole composer of one of the record's strongest tunes, "See My Love (Song for Greg)." Is this worth the three figure prices it commands on auction lists? No. But what is? It's decent music if you can get it.

Godlike work from the legendary Nick Drake – and exactly the kind of record that's made him a continuing legend over the years! The style is completely its own – not really folk or rock, but not really jazz either – yet served up with plenty of jazzy phrasing that's helped keep Drake's music fresher than most as the decades move on – and which makes each song here a really rich discovery – even if, like us, you've heard the album hundreds of times in the past! The production is wonderful – with slight underscorings of strings that help unlock dark corners of the songs.

“Μερικές φορές εμείς οι καλλιτέχνες δεν είμαστε αντικειμενικοί με το έργο μας . Και σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις το παρακάνουμε τόσο πολύ με την αντιεμπορικότητα, με αποτέλεσμα να μην μας καταλαβαίνει το κοινό” είχε δηλώσει κάποτε ο Tim Buckley, περιγράφοντας με τον καλύτερο τρόπο την σύντομη αλλά δημιουργική καριέρα του. Αρκετά νέος, ταλαντούχος, εύστροφος και ανυπόμονος να εξερευνήσει διαφορετικές μουσικές φόρμες ο Buckley υπέγραψε συμβόλαιο με την ετικέτα Elektra χάρις στον manager του Frank Zappa, Herb Cohen, που είχε εντυπωσιαστεί τόσο απο το υλικό του όσο και από τα εκπληκτικά φωνητικά προσόντα του.

Το πρώτο του album, με τίτλο το όνομά του, κυκλοφόρησε το ’66 και , αν μη τι άλλο, έδειχνε ξεκάθαρα ότι επρόκειτο περί μιας ξεχωριστής περίπτωσης, αλλά η καλλιτεχνική ωρίμανση του θα φτάσει πολύ γρήγορα με το επόμενο, που άκουγε στον τίτλο “Goodbye and Hello”!

Ηχογραφημένο στο Los Angeles τον Ιούνιο του ’67, θεωρείται δικαιολογημένα σαν το δημιουργικό αποκορύφωμα του. Επηρρεασμένος κυρίως απο τη folk, την jazz και το rock n roll o Buckley παρουσίασε μια σειρά τραγουδιών (“Goodbye and hello”, “Morning glory”, “Pleasant Street”, “No man can find the war”, “I never asked to be your mountain”, “Once I was”, “Carnival song”, “Phantasmagoria in two”, “Hallucinations”) ανυπέρβλητης ομορφιάς, ευαισθησίας και μελαγχολίας που χαρακτηρίζονταν από το ιδιοφυές εκκεντρικό ποιητικό του χάρισμα και τα τρελλά μέσα στην δραματικότητα τους παθιασμένα στροβιλιστά φωνητικά του. Και ακόμα περισσότερο το “Goodbye and hello” αποτελεί την απεγνωσμένη αναζήτηση της λύτρωσης του Buckley απο τον πόλεμο που ο ίδιος είχε κηρύξει στον εαυτό του.Ένας πόλεμος που κράτησε μέχρι τον Ιούνιο του ’75, όταν ο Buckley, πάμπτωχος και χωρίς συμβόλαιο, πέθανε, σε ηλικία μόλις είκοσι οκτώ ετών από υπερβολική δόση ηρωίνης και μορφίνης, αφήνοντας πίσω του εννέα υπέροχους δίσκους και αρκετές ανεκπλήρωτες υποσχέσεις. One of a handful of enigmatic albums cut in the early 70s by Sixto Rodriguez – a Latin-tinged singer with a style that's a bit like that of Jose Feliciano, but trippier, and with more rock and folk touches! This set's probably his best one – thanks to arrangements and production by Dennis Coffey and Mike Theodore, both of whom give the album a stoned-out feel that sets it up nicely with other work on the Sussex label at the time.

Friday morning with Nick Drake - Bryter Layter 1970 (Island Records)

With even more of the Fairport Convention crew helping him out -- including bassist Dave Pegg and drummer Dave Mattacks along with, again, a bit of help from Richard Thompson -- as well as John Cale and a variety of others, Drake tackled another excellent selection of songs on his second album. Demonstrating the abilities shown on Five Leaves Left didn't consist of a fluke, Bryter Layter featured another set of exquisitely arranged and performed tunes, with producer Joe Boyd and orchestrator Robert Kirby reprising their roles from the earlier release. Starting with the elegant instrumental "Introduction," as lovely a mood-setting piece as one would want, Bryter Layter indulges in a more playful sound at many points, showing that Drake was far from being a constant king of depression.

While his performances remain generally low-key and his voice quietly passionate, the arrangements and surrounding musicians add a considerable amount of pep, as on the jazzy groove of the lengthy "Poor Boy." The argument could be made that this contravenes the spirit of Drake's work, but it feels more like a calmer equivalent to the genre-sliding experiments of Van Morrison at around the same time. Numbers that retain a softer approach, like "At the Chime of a City Clock," still possess a gentle drive to them. Cale's additions unsurprisingly favor the classically trained side of his personality, with particularly brilliant results on "Northern Sky." As his performances on keyboards and celeste help set the atmosphere, Drake reaches for a perfectly artful reflection on loss and loneliness and succeeds wonderfully.by Ned Raggett

Long awaited release of this psychedelic/acid folk masterpiece from the North. Arthur started his career in Toronto, Canada as folkie in the mid 60s. In 1969 he went to Colorado and recorded a 1-sided demo LP that surfaced some years ago in collector's circles. It was on Two:Dot, the same label that Hendrickson Roadhouse was on. Only a hand full of demo copies were released and sent out to major labels to get a record deal. This happened only later after he signed with Tumbleweed Records and released two albums as Arthur Gee.This first ever official release includes his complete demo lp, unreleased sessions and his mega rare 45 rpm both from before the LP and recorded in Canada.The music can be described as a mixture of Perry Leopold, William C.Beeley and early Pink Floyd (his 45 rm) which is pure magic.
