A landmark album of Brazilian funk – the record that set the tone for so
many others to follow – and which can easily stand head to head with
the best American funk of the time as well! The group's headed by
Brazilian pianist Dom Salvador – who you'll know from 60s bossa nova
material and straighter jazz sounds – but here, Dom's got this
heavy-hitting left hand approach –which is a perfect balance to the
funky combo Abolicao – who play with this rich sound that's an equal
balance of jazz, funk, and Brazilian music influences. The record's a
great precursor to later Brazilian funk albums – like those by Banda
Black Rio or Unaio Black – but the influence of Salvador's piano gives
the record a jazzier edge, one that mixes extremely well with the wide
range of percussion on the set.
One of the trippiest albums recorded for Verve in the 60s – a unique 2LP
set by Japanese psych artist Harumi – and a record that stands proudly
next to the best by Zappa or the Velvets at the time! The double-length
space of the record really helps give it some shape – as Harumi starts
out sweet, then gets a bit wilder, and increases the sense of
experimentation as the set rolls on – so that the final track is a
side-long psychedelic jam that's topped with spoken passages by Harumi's
parents and sister! We like the poppier tunes the best, though – and
they feature a mix of orchestrations, fuzzy guitar, and vibes – all
layered with a really beautiful sense of sound, to accompany vocals by
Harumi and Rosko. There's a gentle, breezy, and sometimes slightly
funky quality to these numbers – Sunshine Pop with a trace of jazz – and
exactly the kind of psyche album you might imagine from Verve in the
60s!
The signature sound of Jerzy Milian’s vibraphone (heard most notably in
the recordings of Krzysztof Komeda and Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski) has
managed to grasp the attention of jazz devotees all over the globe for
nearly half a century. Yet Milian is also an esteemed composer and an
arranger of skill and imagination whose talent and ingenuity were
recognised by many, including the Jazzanova collective. While the
artist’s solo discography is rather scant, all of his releases are much
sought for (and even more paid for!). The „Jerzy Milian Tapes” series
will feature a profusion of lost and unreleased recordings, all
retaining a strong flavour of many different shades of jazz. And yes, it
was all written by the man alone!
14 rare and unpublished tracks from one of Poland’s seminal jazz
musicians. Upbeat grooves, dreamy bossa novas plus some fine easy
listening tunes. Fiery trumpets, sweet saxophones and witty vibraphone
solos – all this and more encompassed in fifteen short musical forms
recorded with Günther Gollasch’s big band throughout the 1970s.By GAD Records

Kellee Patterson's debut LP Maiden Voyage
is edgier and more challenging than her subsequent soul-oriented
sessions, yet at the same time it's also the most mainstream recording
ever issued on the Black Jazz imprint, boasting little of the label's
signature deep-groove swagger. Produced and arranged by Black Jazz
founder Gene Russell, the album's late-night, neon-lit atmosphere nevertheless does right by Patterson's sultry if slight vocals, although the material -- highlighted by the Herbie Hancock-penned "Maiden Voice" -
A brilliant album – and real turning point for Herbie Hancock! After
first coming onto the scene as the soul jazz hero between Blue Note
funky classics like "Watermelon Man" or "Blind Man, Blind Man" – Herbie
emerges here as a concerned modernist with a strand of spirituality that
runs deeper than previously expressed. The key track in this vision is
his brilliant modal number "Maiden Voyage" – one of those tunes that
sounded totally fresh immediately, and which was picked up by many
others as a jazz anthem during the 60s. The rest of the album's equally
great – and features George Coleman on tenor, Freddie Hubbard on
trumpet, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – all making for
a very hip lineup that really lets Herbie open up stylistically!
A bit more of a high concept album than some of Wynton Marsalis'
previous efforts – a set with a few more added horns on side one, and an
extended suite on side two! The work definitely shows Wynton's
increasing concern with jazz history – his desire to embrace, and
sometimes represent, decades of past musical expression in his work – a
real Lincoln Center sort of impulse, but one that still comes off
relatively well here, and without as much hoke as you'd expect. Side
one has Wynton working with regular pianist Marcus Roberts, plus Todd
Williams on tenor and soprano sax and Wes Anderson on alto – and side
two features a completely different group, much more in an older-styled
jazz vein – with Michael White on clarinet, Danny Barker on banjo, Teddy
Riley on trumpet, and Freddie Lonzo on trombone.
A fantastic album by The Dramatics – with a harder funkier sound than
you'll find on most of their other records of the time – a gritty gem
from the group's early years, and a record that really deserves its
placement on the Stax label! The record has the group moving into a
post-Temptations style of righteous soul – grooving hard with a really
heavy bottom on funky numbers like "Get Up and Get Down" and "Whatcha
See Is Whatcha Get", and even dropping a bit of a drug reference on the
cut "Marry Don't Cha Wanna" – one of those messed-up lyric numbers we'd
expect from a Latin Soul group! But the album's also got a sweet side
too – as it features the amazing ballad cut "In The Rain", which has
some of the most amazing production you'll ever find on the Stax label –
harmony work that rivals the greatness of the east coast scene of the
time.

Tony Joe White July 23, 1943 in Oak Grove, Louisiana and died October 24, 2018 in Leiper's Fork, Tennessee.
Tony Joe White,
aka the Swamp Fox, has been on a roll these past few years, issuing
album after self-released album of quality original material full of
deep, dark, blues-flavored Florida vintage roots music.Heroines
is no exception, but it is a record with a twist. First, it's on the
Sanctuary label. Secondly, five of the record's 12 tracks are recorded
with female vocalists in duet. They include the great Jessi Colter, Shelby Lynne, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, and Michelle White.
The set opens with "Gabriella," a brief, jazzy flamenco-kissed
instrumental, played on a pair of acoustic guitars. "Can't Go Back Home"
stars Lynne. A true laid-back Tony Joe nocturnal swamp blues, it nonetheless carries within it that slightly menacing tension. Lynne's
voice, which is well known for its power, showcases its other side
here, one that is expressive, soulful and sensual even on slow burn. White's vocal whispers its edgy truth, underscored by his signature guitar sound. "Closing in the Fire," with Williams,
is a steamy, R&B growler with horns. The riff is a mid-tempo
take-off from her own "Hot Blood," and this tune feels as if it is an
update of hers. "Playa del Carmen Night," with its Spanish folk
overtones, is a duet between White and his daughter Michelle. It's a whispering love ballad, one that shimmers with acoustic guitars and hand percussion. Michelle White,
a fine country and blues singer in her own right, brings the notion of
memory inherent in the song's body full-force to the front line. It's
bittersweet and beautiful. "Wild Wolf Calling Me" features Harris in fine voice at her country gospel best. White's baritone snakes around her plaintive wail and moan and brings a hint of the foreboding eternal to her testament. Colter
is a country music legend, and this track's the evidence as to why. Her
subdued, deeply expressive, reedy croon goes up against the fuzzed-up
blues guitars, while White's ominous baritone adds depth, and an otherworldly dimension, to his song. The rest of the cuts here, with White
taking the vocals on his own, are fine as well. They simmer, just below
the boiling point, touching on everything from backwoods life, love,
politics, and spirituality, to the chaos in a country where firearms do
more talking than at any time since the Old West, as in "Chaos Boogie." Tony Joe's
writing is flawless, his guitar playing is phenomenal; he gets more
creative, funky expression from his minimal, fluid approach than many
players who use a lot more notes. Heroines
is another winner in the Swamp Fox catalog that once more proves not
only is he a vital artist 35 years after his first big hit, but one
whose consistency is remarkable and unsullied.
One of the grooviest albums we've ever heard from Erlon Chaves – a
Brazilian arranger who got his start in the bossa generation, later did
some more traditional music – but here explodes with this great fusion
of European and Brazilian soundtrack styles! The record's credited to
the Orquesta St Moritz – most likely a studio group with a European
name, for good pedigree – but there's a huge amount of sounds here that
rival some of the best modes coming from the EMI/Odeon label at the
start of the 70s – particularly the mix of samba and bossa elements with
larger funky arrangements, then given a more sophisticated twist – as
you'd find in the music of Marcos Valle!
An incredible record from Jerzy Milian – easily one of the hippest vibes
players in Europe in the 60s, and a key member of the Polish jazz scene
that also included Krzystof Komeda and Tomasz Stanko! The album's an
extremely evocative session that features Milian's vibes and marimba
mostly in a spare trio setting – stepping out with a highly chromatic
tone that has echoes of Bobby Hutcherson's straighter Blue Note work of
the 60s, but which also flows out with a unique sense of color and
timing. A few tracks feature great wordless vocals from singer Ewa
Wanat of the Novi Singers – drifting along with the tunes in a haunting
way that has a bit of a soundtrack feel – and the album also features a
bit of guest flute from Janusz Mych. Titles include "Bazar W
Aszchabadzie", "Tempus Jazz 67", "Serial Rag", "Valse Ex Cathedra", and
"My Favourite Band".By Dusty Groove

Jerzy Milian Trio - Rewelacyjny Luciano (Sensational Luciano)
Sweet vibes from the great Lionel Hampton – sounding different here than
both his early swing years, and his later small combo modes – and
working in a style that has his instrument in the lead over hip Chicago
soul backings from the team at Brunswick Records! The album's got a
nicely laidback vibe, and a mix of core instrumentation with larger
charts that's not unlike some of the cool Cadet Records work by Ramsey
Lewis at the end of the 60s – except with vibes, not piano. Willie
Henderson and Tom Tom Washington did the arrangements – and nearly every
track's an original by Eugene Record.
Nigeria had a unique music scene which began spreading rapidly in the
1970s. The era was based on unspoiled use of fuzz pedal, keyboards and
indisputable influences of the Psychedelic Blues bands of the West. In
1980 Effi Duke & The Love Family came out with their debut Mr. Love.
It was released by Homzy Records which was a home of many Afro-Funk
records, going strong from mid '70s toward '80s. Effi Duke & The
Love Family being one of their most energetic albums. The '80s were
definitely more into a jazzy sound with disco slowly infiltrating the
African music scene. What's so unique about Mr. Love is Effi Duke's love
for guitar based Jazz and together with African rhythms and funky bass,
his album is a Funk/Jazz/Disco hybrid. He's an incredible guitarist and
also at the time of this LP an ex-Wings member. They were one of the
most popular bands from Nigeria. Effi Duke was a key part of the scene
with being member of The Wings, The Visitors, The Apostles, he played
also the guitars on Mary Afi Usuah's fantastic second LP African Woman
(which will be also rereleased on PMG) and on many other great albums
including the incredible Folk 77 album.
Cinedelic Records present a reissue of Musica Amore, the extraordinary
album by Maestro Piccioni originally released in 1972. Musica Amore
includes songs from various soundtracks showing Piccioni's many facets.
He utilizes the gorgeous voice of Shawn Robinson in "Right Or Wrong" and
"Once and Again", from giallo thriller ...Dopo Di Che, Uccide Il
Maschio E Lo Divora (1971), the choir I Cantori Moderni di Alessandro
Alessandroni, the band of I Marc 4 (Maurizio Majorana, Antonello
Vannucchi, Roberto Podio, Carlo Pes) and soloists of the caliber of
Gianni Basso and Dino Piana. An absolutely killer album with superb
arrangements, funky beats, exotic sounds ("Ebony Ride"), breaks, erotic
lounge, beat, shake ("Abigaille"), psychedelia ("Fiore Nero"), and jazz,
that stands as a key album in the world of Italian library music and
soundtracks. By twoheadeddog
Early 70s psych folk from DR Hooker – looking pretty biblical in the
cover photo – with a spiritual tilt to some of the lyrics, but in a
pretty tripped out way – and a wild mix of styles, from easygoing,
approachable folk pop, to untamed, fuzzed out psychedelia! We were
expecting some laidback psych folk, and there is some of that, but also
some full on psychedelic rock – with a mix of acoustic & electric
elements, from guitars, to dobro, synthesizer, organ & piano, vibes
& other percussion.
το τραγούδι του Φρανκ Σινάτρα «Stranger in the night».
24/7/2010 By newsit.gr

Essential work by Aretha Franklin – one of her best albums for Atlantic
in the late 60s, with tracks that virtually define the sound of hard
soul during the late 60s! The album's filled with excellent material –
featuring 2 killer tracks recorded in Muscle Shoals ("Do Right Woman, Do
Right Man" and "I Never Loved A Man"), plus lots of other great hard
soul groovers done with Aretha's guiding light, Arif Mardin, in
Atlantic's New York studios – including the tracks "Respect", "Baby,
Baby, Baby", "Save Me", and "Dr. Feelgood".
