One of the grooviest albums we've ever heard from Erlon Chaves – a Brazilian arranger who got his start in the bossa generation, later did some more traditional music – but here explodes with this great fusion of European and Brazilian soundtrack styles! The record's credited to the Orquesta St Moritz – most likely a studio group with a European name, for good pedigree – but there's a huge amount of sounds here that rival some of the best modes coming from the EMI/Odeon label at the start of the 70s – particularly the mix of samba and bossa elements with larger funky arrangements, then given a more sophisticated twist – as you'd find in the music of Marcos Valle!

An incredible record from Jerzy Milian – easily one of the hippest vibes players in Europe in the 60s, and a key member of the Polish jazz scene that also included Krzystof Komeda and Tomasz Stanko! The album's an extremely evocative session that features Milian's vibes and marimba mostly in a spare trio setting – stepping out with a highly chromatic tone that has echoes of Bobby Hutcherson's straighter Blue Note work of the 60s, but which also flows out with a unique sense of color and timing. A few tracks feature great wordless vocals from singer Ewa Wanat of the Novi Singers – drifting along with the tunes in a haunting way that has a bit of a soundtrack feel – and the album also features a bit of guest flute from Janusz Mych. Titles include "Bazar W Aszchabadzie", "Tempus Jazz 67", "Serial Rag", "Valse Ex Cathedra", and "My Favourite Band".By Dusty Groove

Lionel Hampton - Please Sunrise 1972 (Brunswick)

Sweet vibes from the great Lionel Hampton – sounding different here than both his early swing years, and his later small combo modes – and working in a style that has his instrument in the lead over hip Chicago soul backings from the team at Brunswick Records! The album's got a nicely laidback vibe, and a mix of core instrumentation with larger charts that's not unlike some of the cool Cadet Records work by Ramsey Lewis at the end of the 60s – except with vibes, not piano. Willie Henderson and Tom Tom Washington did the arrangements – and nearly every track's an original by Eugene Record.

 Nigeria had a unique music scene which began spreading rapidly in the 1970s. The era was based on unspoiled use of fuzz pedal, keyboards and indisputable influences of the Psychedelic Blues bands of the West. In 1980 Effi Duke & The Love Family came out with their debut Mr. Love. It was released by Homzy Records which was a home of many Afro-Funk records, going strong from mid '70s toward '80s. Effi Duke & The Love Family being one of their most energetic albums. The '80s were definitely more into a jazzy sound with disco slowly infiltrating the African music scene. What's so unique about Mr. Love is Effi Duke's love for guitar based Jazz and together with African rhythms and funky bass, his album is a Funk/Jazz/Disco hybrid. He's an incredible guitarist and also at the time of this LP an ex-Wings member. They were one of the most popular bands from Nigeria. Effi Duke was a key part of the scene with being member of The Wings, The Visitors, The Apostles, he played also the guitars on Mary Afi Usuah's fantastic second LP African Woman (which will be also rereleased on PMG) and on many other great albums including the incredible Folk 77 album.

Early 70s psych folk from DR Hooker – looking pretty biblical in the cover photo – with a spiritual tilt to some of the lyrics, but in a pretty tripped out way – and a wild mix of styles, from easygoing, approachable folk pop, to untamed, fuzzed out psychedelia! We were expecting some laidback psych folk, and there is some of that, but also some full on psychedelic rock – with a mix of acoustic & electric elements, from guitars, to dobro, synthesizer, organ & piano, vibes & other percussion.
