Experiment in Terror. Ένας τίτλος που είναι πάντα επίκαιρος. Εδώ έχουμε να κάνουμε με μια ταινία όμως. Με έξοχη ασπρόμαυρη φωτογραφία, ρεαλιστική σκηνοθεσία σε φυσικούς χώρους και μουσική από τον Henry Mancini μόνιμο συνεργάτη του Μπλέικ Έντουαρντς, το Experiment in Terror είναι μια ταινία που δεν έχει υπερβολές, παλικαρισμούς και περιττούςδιαλόγους. Δημιουργώντας ωστόσο ένα σωστό ψυχολογικό προφίλ του επίδοξου τρομοκράτη.H Lee Remick Με κίνδυνο την ζωή της απειλείται από έναν άγνωστο τύπομέσα στο ίδιο της το σπίτι ο οποίος της ζητά να ληστέψει η ίδια την τράπεζα πουδουλεύει. Αυτή θα ειδοποιήσει το FBI και ο αστυνομικός Glenn Ford θα αναλάβει την υπόθεση. Η αναζήτηση του δράστη με δόλωμα την Remick στο Σαν Φρανσίσκο της δεκαετίαςτου '60 έχει αρχίσει. Η κλιμάκωση της αγωνίας γίνεται σε μια κορυφαία σεκάνς μέσα στο στάδιο κατά τη διάρκεια του αγώνα μπέιζμπολ.

Paul Bryan ‎- Listen Of 1973 (Blue Rock Records)

As the grammatically befuddling title might allude, English is not Paul Bryan's native tongue, in fact Bryan is a Brazillian folk songwriter whose real name is Sergio Sa. He assumed this faux-Anglo alter ego as an outlet for his English language recordings made in 1973, inspired by British and American acts like The Beatles and Stevie Wonder. Given how accustomed we might have become to recent Brazillian reissues focussing on tropicalia or bossa nove, these compositions do strike you as incredibly 'westernised' in their presentation: the kinds of rhythms associated with indigenous latin American musics are all but absent from Listen Of, instead the arrangements take on a Burt Bacharach-like syrupy richness, with only smatterings of incredibly technical Brazillian folk style guitar playing giving the game away on occasions. Given the warmth and richness of the string arrangements and the ballad-heavy tone of the writing, you might expect this album to be somehow schmaltzy in tone, or in some way excessively sentimental. Far from it though, Bryan comes across as incredibly genuine and heartfelt, responsible for music that's as beautifully recorded as it is melodic and memorable.

Bobby Bland - Two Steps From The Blues 1961 (Duke)

An incredible record from Bobby Blue Bland – and quite possibly the greatest one he ever made! The set's got an amazing something special that's unlike most other material of the time – a bit blues, but a lot of soul too – still with some echoes of R&B in the jazzier charts used for the backdrop, but presented with a rock-solid style that definitely points the way towards many sounds and styles to come in the 60s. And although Bland recorded many of these tracks as separate singles, there's a way they're put together here that makes the whole thing sound completely marvelous together – a really well-conceived track list that shows that Bobby's an even greater artist in the space of a full record. The arrangements are perfect, and Bobby's rough soulful voice is blended in this amazing way with killer horn arrangements that are far more sophisticated than most stuff that ever came after this, and which never get in the way, but only back up his deep emotion.

Kenny Dorham - Round About Midnight At The Cafe Bohemia 1956 (Blue Note)

One of our favorite albums by Kenny Dorham – and a really different session than his usual studio work! The album captures Kenny in a relaxed live setting, with a bit more dirt on his horn than usual, and some great gutsy players in the group, like Bobby Timmons, Sam Jones, and JR Monterose.

Dave Pike - Pike's Peak 1962 (Epic)

Beautiful beautiful early work from Dave Pike – a cascading array of vibes and piano – stretched out over some longer tracks that skip with a lyrical and modal groove throughout! Dave's working here with a group that includes Bill Evans on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Walter Perkins on drums – and although his style is a bit more restrained than on his later funk albums, it also proves to be a wonderful match for the fluid colors of Evans' work on piano – as well as Perkins' light and playful work on the drum kit. There's a simplicity here that's really great – not as "over your head" as the Dave Pike Set of later years, and with a gentle grace that shows what a keenly mature player Pike was, even at this early age.
