R.I.P Αλέκος Καρακαντάς 1947 - 2017

Ένας απ τους κορυφαίους έλληνες κιθαρίστες  ο οποίος ξεκίνησε  στους  Juniors και συνέχισε στους We Five,Axis με τον Σταμάτη Σπανουδάκη τον Γιώργο Ρωμανό τον Ντεμη Ρούσο.... Καλό ταξίδι!

Δεν θα πω πως ο Αλέκος Καρακαντάς, που έφυγε χθες από τη ζωή στα 70 χρόνια του, ήταν ο μεγαλύτερος Έλληνας ηλεκτρικός κιθαρίστας –αυτό θα το πουν οι συνάδελφοί του– θα πω όμως τούτο. Κανένας δεν είχε τον ήχο του, έναν ήχο trademark, φτιαγμένο από τη μεγάλη δεξιοτεχνία του κατά πρώτον και βεβαίως από το fuzzbox και τις πατέντες του κατά δεύτερον. Αυτός ο ήχος, έστω και μία φορά να τον άκουγες, κόλλαγε στη μνήμη σου για πάντα. Και είναι τούτη η απόλυτη μαγκιά των μεγάλων κιθαριστών – να μπορεί να τους ξεχωρίσει ο καθείς, ακόμη και ο πιο αδαής, ανάμεσα σε χιλιάδες άλλους. A Bollywood soundtrack from the 80s generation – one that's got a style that definitely matches its decade! Tracks are long, upbeat, and joyous – in the best 70s Bollywood mode – but also feature more keyboards and drum machine rhythms, which creates this moodier quality in the music – a vibe that's maybe not dark in the way that Euro electro material might be, thanks to a few disco flourishes from time to time – but which definitely sets the whole thing apart from the classic Bollywood mode!

Guido And Maurizio De Angelis - La Polizia Incrimina, La Legge Assolve 1973 (Beat Records Company)

One of the first great Italian cop movies of the 70s – and a superbly-scored film with a really wonderful soundtrack! The DeAngelis brothers are clearly drawing heavily from an American tradition initiated by Lalo Schfrin – using heavy guitar, funky undercurrents, and even some soulfully righteous touches to really set this one apart from other Italian films of the time. Yet the approach here is also a bit more different, touches with some of the darker modes and more redemptive themes of Italian westerns – a sense of suspension and drama that's incredibly powerful, and heard to best effect on the solo instrumental passages – which include guitar by Maurizio and flute by Guido.

Andrew Wartts and The Gospel Storytellers - There Is A God Somewhere1982 (Champ Records)

One of those rare gospel albums that sounds nothing like conventional gospel – and which instead is a wonderful criss-crossing of soul, funk, and spirit – all guided by an artist who's as righteous as his message! The set was recorded in Nashville, and has a nicely laidback approach – with lead vocals from Andre Wartts, in a raspy style that almost owes a bit to Curtis Mayfield – especially in the way that Curtis could easily shift between the secular and spiritual, and always make the whole thing sound incredibly personal. Yet there's also some currents of jazz, some moments of funk, and a really collaborative approach to the album – as the Gospel Storytellers are clearly a very close-knit, intimate group – one who really come alive when some of the backup vocalists join Andre's lead.By Dusty
