A stunning album from Orquesta Harlow – one of their wildest of the 60s,
and filled with delights! The record starts with this strange sound of
a train pulling into a station, then rolls into a massive boogaloo
groove that really sets the pace for the album – hitting hard with some
heavy percussion, and really pushing the group through a great blend of
English and Spanish language numbers! The whole thing's great – easily
one of the best by the group.

Pete Terrace challenges Pete Rodriguez for the title of "King Of The
Boogaloo" in this live set recorded at Chez Jose in New York! The
album's got a few tracks that say boogaloo, but which aren't – but
that's still ok with us, because the bulk of the set is a hard grooving
batch of uptempo groovers that would make anyone proud – and the
record's easily one of Pete's best from the 60s!
Weird instrumental grooves from composer Sandro Brugnolini – played by a
small combo that almost has a sound library feel! We know Brugnolini
most from his soundtrack work, and this set's got a similar flair for
odd sounds and weird rhythms – played here by a group that features
organ, two guitars, bass, and drums – plus lots of unusual effects that
make the whole thing sound strange and trippy! The music is a weird
amalgam of funky jazz and soundtrack modes – familiar at points, but
really offbeat at others – with a few key groovers mixed with mellower,
more atmospheric numbers.
This album is legendary for many reasons; Tubby Hayes is playing on it,
the Mike Sammes Singers are the vocalists and the arrangements are
absolutely insane, moving from hard latin jazz, through occasional
swings and odd psych. Most of the hymns are hard to recognise until the
vocals kick in, so you can use the album as a musical guessing game.
Marvellous and totally unique.
