Gandalf ‎– Gandalf 1969 (Capitol)

Label : Capitol

Value :

GANDALF, formerly the RAHGOOS prior to their LP release, appeared at various New York clubs throughout the '60's; such as "The Phone Booth", Scott Muni's "Rolling Stone", "The Electric Circus", Murray the K's "World", and the legendary "Night Owl Cafe" in Greenwich Village. It was there that the RAHGOOS met songwriters Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon who brought the band to the attention of record producers Koppelman & Rubin. K&R signed the band and immediately started work on an album for their newly formed "Hot Biscuit Disc Company" label which was distributed through Capitol. K&R suggested various name changes which did not sit well with the group. However, they ultimately decided to forfeit their name and local fan recognition to appease K&R.
During a gig at the "Rolling Stone", drummer Davey Bauer was passing the time reading Tolkien's "The Hobbit" while the rest of the band went through the ritual of brainstorming a band name. Davey chimed in, "How about "GANDALF AND THE WIZARDS".
That name stuck. The project was delayed after the deal with Capitol fell apart. In the interim, the band lost faith and also dissolved. Subsequently, K&R & Capitol parted ways with the agreement that two more LP's would be released on the Capitol label, and GANDALF was one of them. It was finally released in early 1969, with no band to back it and little promotion. Two songs were penned by guitarist Peter Sando and one, "Can You Travel in the Dark Alone", received a  flurry of FM play. The late Allison Steele, "The Nightbird", on WNEW-FM New York, would introduce the song with a lengthy dose of her inimitable psychedelic poetry.

Vietnam Veterans ‎– Catfish Eyes And Tales 1987 (Music Maniac Records

Label : Music Maniac Records

Value :

The Vietnam Veterans is a French psychedelic band, hailing originally from Chalon-sur-Saône, a commune in eastern France. They released six full-length albums during the 1980s, starting in 1983. The band was praised by many alternative music publications, including Bucketfull of Brains during the 1980s. After a 21 year long pause, they are now active again.
After releasing their compilation album The Days of Pearly Spencer in 1988, they broke up, and some members moved on to other projects. In 2005 The Vietnam Veterans released a single called "I Give You My Life / Children Eyes", and in 2009 a full-length album called Strange Girl (As The Gitanes). The band The Gitanes was one of the projects a few of the former Vets had, and the name is now added to The Vietnam Veterans name, calling it "The Vietnam Veterans (a.k.a. The Gitanes)".

Le Orme ‎– Ad Gloriam 1967 (Car Juke Box)

Label : Car Juke Box

Value :

The cover of Le Orme's Ad Gloriam is about as psychedelic as it is possible to be or imagine; it is a swirl of color and a collage of pop-art images, featuring drawings (and photos) of the band members and various op-art images of well-endowed women scattered amid butterflies and geometric shapes. The music is also, indeed, psychedelic, and runs the gamut from pleasant, Beatles-influenced ballads to more spaced-out interludes emphasizing Tagliapietra's flute and Smeraldi's lead guitar. "Mita Mita" sounds vaguely like the Who's "I Can't Reach You," while "Fiori di Giglio" is vaguely reminiscent of "Penny Lane," and "Non So Restare Solo" is a very distant relative to "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite." Everything is sung in Italian, but the ballads (and the harmonies) are pleasant enough regardless of any language barrier on this side of the transaction. Interestingly, but not unexpectedly, the two bonus tracks, off of contemporary singles by the band, are the most cheerful and accessible songs.

Jim Morrison 3/7/1971

Σχηματίστηκαν στο Λος Άντζελες το 1965 και πήραν το όνομά τους από το βιβλίο του Aldus Huxley "The Doors Of Perception". Το μεγαλείο των Doors εντοπιζόταν ακριβώς στο χάρισμα τους να μιλούν στα ένστικτα και όχι στη λογική, να αλώνουν τις εγκεφαλικές διεργασίες από την κερκόπορτα του υποσυνείδητου, άλλοτε με παρασύνθημα τις θρυλικές ατάκες του Morrison ("break on through to the other side", "music is your only friend until the end", "we want the world and we want it now") και άλλοτε με πολιορκητικό κριό παγανιστικούς τους ρυθμούς.
Τα τραγούδια τους παρουσίαζαν ποικιλία, από το 11 λεπτης διάρκειας ποιητικό έπος "The End" του Morrison μέχρι το εμπορικό "Light My Fire" του Krieger. To "Strange Days" που ακολούθησε (επίσης το 1967) περιείχε και αυτό το δικό του έπος, το μοναδικό "When The Music's Over".

To "Waiting For The Sun" (1968) ήταν μια άσκηση ισορροπίας ανάμεσα στο "Hello I Love You", που ενθουσίασε το εφηβικό ακροατήριο, και τις προσδοκίες του underground κινήματος, που έβλεπε στο συγκρότημα ένα σύμμαχο εναντίον του κατεστημένου της περιόδου του Βιετνάμ. To "Soft Parade" (1969) ήταν απλώς ένας ενδιάμεσος κρίκος για τα πιο r&b προσανατολισμού "Morrison Hotel" (1970) και "L.A. Woman" (1971).

Arthur Brown - The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown 1968 (Track Record)

Happy Birthday Arthur Brown

Label : Track Record

Value :

Ο φερώνυμος δίσκος των The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown κυκλοφόρησε το 1968 και ήταν ταυτόχρονα ο τελευταίος τους, αφού αποσχίστηκαν δύο μέλη για να σχηματίσουν τους Atomic Rooster.

Dino Valente ‎– Dino Valente 1968 (Epic)

Label : Epic

Value :

Felt - Felt 1971 (Nasco)

Label : Nasco

Value :

For many years the target of counterfeiters, the sole 1971 LP by Alabama guitar prog/psych-rockers Felt was an early candidate for the ‘under the counter’ reissue market. If you don’t know the record it’s an excellent psychy prog outing with twin lead guitars, melodic vocals and keyboards combined into a melancholic anglophile sound clearly influenced by the UK progressive rock invasion. The guitar solos retain something of a West Coast feel reminiscent at times of Wishbone Ash.

Originally issued on the Nashville-based Nasco label (also home to the similar, yet less interesting Whalefeathers) within months of its original release the band had fallen apart due to a drug bust, leaving this as their only legacy.

Demon Fuzz - Afreaka! 1970 (Janus Records)

Label : Janus Records

Value :

Messed-up funky jazz from an obscure early 70s UK group – and an album that really lives up to its trippy cover! The tracks are all long and stretched out – with lots of organ, sax, and spaced out drums – and the overall style is a mix of dub-heavy funk, Afro jazz, and a bit of jazz rock jamming! There's a bit of vocals on the album, but overall most of the set is instrumental – in a really right on and progressive style that we totally love. This is the kind of record that always got passed by in the 80s when everyone was looking for hard James Brown grooves, but which is very much in fashion now with the blunted funky crowd.

The Group ‎– The Feed-back 1970 (RCA)

Label : RCA

Value : From 20 (re) to 600+ (orig) euros

Somewhere in between psyth rock, avant garde jazz and funky jams. The sound is definitely experimental and ostentatiously "underground". The music, anyway, is thrilling. The drum patterns, in particular, are extraordinary: regular, tight groovy, and incredibly close to the "motorik" beat of Can and Meu! "The Group" was not a band of young beatniks. As a matter of fact, it's just a pseudonym for Gruppo D'lmprowisazione Nuova Consonanza, aside project of well known soundtrack composer Ennio Morricone along with other experimental musicians. The rock-focused attitude of the record is quite surprising for such a team of classically-trained men already in their forties!

Pesky Gee! ‎– Exclamation Mark 1969 (Pye)

Label : Pye

Value : From 80 to 150 euros

Starting out as a typical U.K. club soul band, and then turning toward psychedelia and prog rock in the latter half of the '60s, it wasn't until Pesky Gee! changed their name in 1970 to Black Widow, transformed, and released the satanic Sacrifice that they reached the public eye. If not singular in any particular way, the prog-edged Pesky Gee! album, released on Pye in 1969, has enough cool Hammond organ flourishes and late psych-intoned vocals (male and female) to cause interest. Much is aimless, relies too much on the blues-rock boom, or is downright bad ("Born to Be Wild"), but when they got the mix right they were superb, as on their original psych/soul/prog numbers: on "A Place of Heartbreak" there is a superb male/female vocal, a soulful beat, and some haunting changes; while "Where Is My Mind" (both songs were released as a 45) has a driving rhythm, a unique use of horns, and sees the beginning of the band's fascination with sinister subject matter and horror vocalization. The covers get a bit much, although the Julie Driscoll-intoned reading of Donovan's "Season of the Witch" has some fine moments. Not a solid affair but representative of the change in the British music scene of the late '60s.

Label : Uni

Value :

Dreamy dreamy pop psych from Strawberry Alarm Clock – a great late 60s group who skirted the worlds of Sunshine Pop and more jamming garage rock! This album's got a lot more to offer than you might guess from just the title hit – as the instrumentation sometimes gets nicely tripped out – with cool use of organ, harpsichord, and guitar – plus plenty of special effects in production – and even some of the song styles and lengths are unusual too, making the album way more than just a batch of cute little tunes.

Colosseum ‎– Valentyne Suite 1969 (Vertigo)

Label :  Vertigo

Value :

A strong album from Dave Greenslade’s first band cements Dave’s position as the jazz-rock Keith Emerson: Greenslade’s organ playing has all the flair and aggression of Emerson, but has far less classical influence and takes far more from the jazz side of things. The band as a whole does a good enough job, with a side of short songs that resemble the sort of material Cream might have released if they had a hot organist and a bit more fusion influence, and the epic Valentyne Suite itself, a true keyboard tour de force for Greenslade. Not the best album that the Vertigo label would release, but a very fine one nonetheless, and an excellent start for a wonderful home for progressive music.

The Tea Company - Come And Have Some Tea With The Tea Company 1968 (Smash)

Label : Smash

Value :

The Tea Company were one of the early birds from the US psychedelic underground scene, Come And Have Some Tea With The Tea Company stands for the evolution of the 45 rpm psych-garage bands to the upcoming LP-generation with extended improvisation parts. The tea company evolved from the Naturals, which were founded in 1963 and played the big ballroom supporting Mamas and the Papas, The Lovin Spoonful, Bob Dylan, Ritchie Havens, and many others. The band describes themselves as an assemblage of possessed rock performers; retinue preparing the unusual; alternating with the roots of soul whose purpose is to cause sensation, due to stimulation of the auditory centers of the brain!. They became famous in San Francisco for spectacular live shows and lyrical hippie statements. The music is influenced by the Beatles, because they used exactly the same equipment. The group played with lots of freaked-out-echo-organ/-guitar noises on a 12 string Rickenbacher and various stereo madness reminds strongly of Syd Barrett´s spirit but more driven by hard hittin´ drums. Being buddies of Vanilla Fudge and inspired, the Tea Company also did an outrageous 9 min. version of "You keep me hangin on", which is celebrated among 60s collectors as a true milestone. The album is a mindblowing intense production. A must for those who wanna free their minds with unusual "early"Rock´n´Roll experiences!

Song Of A Gypsy may well be one of the best self-issued psych sets from the American underground – a really well-written, well-recorded record that has a very dark personal vision – an approach to the music that's instantly unique, and which shows that digging for rare psych albums can really yield the occasional gem that stands head and shoulders with the bigger names of the time! The Electric Flag ‎– A Long Time Comin' 1968 (Columbia)

Label : Columbia

Value :

Writer Jeff Tamarkin says "ex Butterfield Band guitarist Mike Bloomfield, drummer Buddy Miles, and others put this soul-rock band together in 1967. This debut is a testament to their ability to catch fire and keep on burnin'." That The Electric Flag do so well -- they appeared at the Monterey International Pop Festival with the Blues Project, Paul Butterfield, and Janis Joplin, and all these groups had some musical connection to each other beyond that pivotal festival. A Long Time Comin' is the "new soul" described appropriately enough by the late critic Lillian Roxon, and tunes like "She Should Have Just" and "Over-Lovin' You" lean more towards the soul side than the pop so many radio listeners were attuned to back then.

Nick Gravenites was too much of a purist to ride his blues on the Top 40 the way Felix Cavaliere gave us "Groovin'," so Janis Joplin's eventual replacement in Big Brother & the Holding Company, Gravenites, and this crew pour out "Groovin' Is Easy" on this disc. It's a classy production, intellectual ideas with lots of musical changes, a subdued version of what Joplin herself would give us on I Got Dem Ole Kozmic Blues Again, Mama two years later, with some of that album written by vocalist Gravenites. Though launched after Al Kooper's the Blues Project, A Long Time Comin' itself influenced bands who would go on to sell more records. In the traditional "Wine," it is proclaimed "you know Janis Joplin, she'll tell you all about that wine, baby." As good as the album is, though, the material is pretty much composed by Mike Bloomfield and Barry Goldberg, when they're not covering Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" and adding spoken-word news broadcasts to the mix. More contributions by Buddy Miles and Gravenites in the songwriting department would have been welcome here.

The Gentle Soul - The Gentle Soul 1968 (Epic)

Label : Epic

Value :

The Gentle Soul's sole album is suffused with pretty and wistful folk-rock tunes, deftly produced by Terry Melcher to incorporate dreamy orchestral instrumentation -- harpsichord, flute, and cello -- while retaining an understated subtlety. If you like the Stone Poneys, who made similar material in the late 1960s, there's no way you're not going to like this album. If you're sitting on the fence after that conditional recommendation, it might be too mellow for your tastes. If you want to know how exactly it might differ from the Stone Poneys, it's a little more on the soft-rock side, and definitely heavier on the male-female harmonies. All of which might be underselling the record, which is pretty attractive, though not astounding, on its own terms.

That's probably Ry Cooder making his presence felt on the gutsiest and bluesiest tunes, "Young Man Blue" and "Reelin'," both of which feature excellent acoustic slide guitar. Although Pamela Polland and Rick Stanley sing and write well together, it's Polland whose personality comes through stronger, particularly as she takes the occasional unharmonized lead vocal and is the sole composer of one of the record's strongest tunes, "See My Love (Song for Greg)." Is this worth the three figure prices it commands on auction lists? No. But what is? It's decent music if you can get it.

Joe Pass - Guitar Interludes 1977 (Discovery)

Label : Discovery

Value :

Joe Pass' recording career was in a slump in 1969. His string of World Pacific and Pacific Jazz recordings had come to an end, and he was still four years away from being discovered and fully showcased by producer Norman Granz. This odd LP certainly stands out in his discography. The five brief "Interludes," along with "Joey's Blues," feature Pass playing unaccompanied for some of the first times on record, but with the exception of the "Blues," athe music is quiet and uneventful. The remaining seven selections are quite a contrast, for they feature Pass and a funky rhythm section essentially accompanying seven singers on a variety of very dated pop songs (plus a short rendition of Debussy's "The Maid with the Flaxen Hair"), most of which were written by Irwin Rosman and quickly forgotten; for his part, Pass sounds quite uncomfortable.
