 Nigeria had a unique music scene which began spreading rapidly in the 1970s. The era was based on unspoiled use of fuzz pedal, keyboards and indisputable influences of the Psychedelic Blues bands of the West. In 1980 Effi Duke & The Love Family came out with their debut Mr. Love. It was released by Homzy Records which was a home of many Afro-Funk records, going strong from mid '70s toward '80s. Effi Duke & The Love Family being one of their most energetic albums. The '80s were definitely more into a jazzy sound with disco slowly infiltrating the African music scene. What's so unique about Mr. Love is Effi Duke's love for guitar based Jazz and together with African rhythms and funky bass, his album is a Funk/Jazz/Disco hybrid. He's an incredible guitarist and also at the time of this LP an ex-Wings member. They were one of the most popular bands from Nigeria. Effi Duke was a key part of the scene with being member of The Wings, The Visitors, The Apostles, he played also the guitars on Mary Afi Usuah's fantastic second LP African Woman (which will be also rereleased on PMG) and on many other great albums including the incredible Folk 77 album.

Janko Nilovic ‎- Chorus 1974 (Editions Montparnasse 2000)

Very groovy work from the legendary Janko Nilovic – a set that's every bit as funky as some of his other records, but one that has a slightly different twist as well! The "chorus" in the title is appropriate – as there's a flurry of wordless vocals in the mix of this one – a group who draw from some surprisingly soulful currents to appear on some of the album's best tracks with a style that's more groovy soul ensemble than other uses of chorus styles at the time! Given the mod styles of the tunes, the whole thing almost feels like some lost funky Galt MacDermot stage production – especially as the lead female singer in the group has an especially great range, and might even be a better-known soul singer working without any credit on the date. Janko's blend of keyboards, basslines, and other instrumentation is wonderfu!By Dusty groove.

The album's titled Afro Progressivo, but it's got a sound that's also as spacey as its cover image – served up here in a great blend of electric instrumentation mixed with a fair bit of percussion – all then given some very strange effects in the studio! The sound library set was issued in early 70s Argentina, and it's got this great mix of the tribal and the cosmic – not unlike the wonderful Mandingo albums from the UK 70s scene – which also had a similar blend of fuzz and funk!

Formed in Bermuda in 1968, The Invaders are responsible for what is arguably the most sought after piece of Island Funk in history, their lone long player, 1970s Spacing Out. Full of funky breaks, Meters-esque guitar work, and tripped out horn lines, Spacing Out is not simply collectible because of its exotic locale, it is a stone funk classic that holds its own against such luminaries of the genre as The Meters, The JBs, and the Nite-Liters.

One of THE indie soul treasures of the 70s – a wickedly funky record that blends together jazz, soul, and club – and which stands out with a sound that's all its own! You may well know the tag "moods and grooves" – as the record's had an influence on countless scenes, and has been referenced by many artists over the years. But nothing beats this original set, a sublime batch of electric grooves performed by a core combo of electric keys, bass, and congas – augmented by sweetened strings and some occasional chorus vocals – bad-stepping around the grooves in a mostly-instrumental mode that rivals (if not betters) some of the best funky soundtrack work of the decade!

Piotr Figiel ‎- Piotr 1971 (Pronit)

Polish composer, arranger, vocalist and keyboardist Piotr FIGIEL (1940.04.13 - 2011.12.22) is probably best known for composing music for other artists, movies, TV, radio and theatrical plays. But in the 1960's he was an active musician himself, and toured Scandinavia with The Clivers. Later he would concentrate on studio work, as a collaborator with other artists in one capacity or another or for recording material for a wide variety of purposes.

Figiel also recorded and released a couple of solo albums: Piotr in 1971 (also known as Organ Hammondy) and Music in 1976. Of these two productions it's the former that will be of interest to fans of progressive rock, especially if you have a soft touch for jazzrock and fusion. The latter appears to be more of a purebred pop production, and from some descriptions apparently more of a compilation in spirit, but issued under Figiel's name. .

Shades Of Joy ‎– The Music Of El Topo 1970 (Douglas)

The mysterious Shades of Joy recorded the wholly instrumental album The Music of El Topo in San Francisco, the LP finding release on the Douglas label in 1970. Co-produced by Alan Douglas (famous for his controversial posthumous work on some Jimi Hendrix material), it's an odd but listenable mix of early jazz-rock fusion, psychedelia, funk, and the kind of meditatively somber and pretty music you might expect to hear on the soundtrack to a period drama.

And in fact most of the compositions are credited to film director Alejandro Jodorowsky, who was responsible for the early-'70s cult film El Topo. Fifteen musicians are credited with playing on the album, the most noted of them being occasional Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia sideman Howard Wales (on electric keyboards), though there are also numerous percussionists, brassmen, and flutists; in fact, there are three combination flutist/tenor saxophonists alone. (Jodorowsky himself does not play any of the music, however.) Martin Fierro (who played flute, tenor sax, alto sax, and cowbells, as well as being credited as a "scratcher") seems to have been the musician most involved with the project, also doing the orchestration and horn arrangements. The Music of El Topo, incidentally, is an entirely different album than the Apple-issued El Topo soundtrack, for which Jodorowsky got composing credit for all of the music.By Allmusic

Recorded in San Francisco in 1970 on the Douglas label, this LP is commonly associated with the visionary Western-on-acid epic film "El Topo." It's an intriguing piece of urban jazz funk fusion.

And a somewhat confusing record. First, there are two versions – the film score on Apple (which I hear is to be avoided) and this bay area jazzfunk jam “inspired by the film” by the Shades of Joy on Douglas.
Alejandro Jodorowsky – the movie’s director is credited here with writing all the music (which sounds improvised), yet appears to play no instrument or take part in the session at all. But, of the people who do actually play on this record, most noteable is funky keyboard legend Howard Wales! The sound here ranges from all out funky get-downs, to trippy, moody electric Miles Davis-esque excursions. Very highly recommended.By Wax

Puccio Roelens may have his name on the cover, but the album's very much a hip small combo date – one that features fantastic instrumentation from some great jazzy musicians – but all of whom are playing on the funkier side of their spectrum! The sound here is unique – almost an early 70s extrapolation of the kind of mod grooves you'd find on a 60s Italian soundtrack – kind of a jerk-into-funk vibe – touched with a few mellower moments here an there, which feature some great tenor and trumpet.

Sometimes, a singer can act like a star, even though their actual place in the musical universe is far from the limelight – and that's definitely the case here with Dennis Caldirola, aka Dennis The Fox – a vocalist who's not afraid to brashly lay down his own lyrics that filled with offbeat wit, weird warnings, and a sense of presence that hardly belies the tiny circulation the album got at the time! The whole thing's a stripped-down, virtually-homemade production – but it's also one of those records that hardly knows that at all – and the group are surprisingly tight at times, even ripping off The Meters pretty heavily on one of the album's funkier tracks.

Curtis Mayfield's lasting classic – and an album that the world will remember forever! Apart from being his hugely successful entry into the blacksploitation soundtrack field, this album's also a monster set of grooves that includes some of Curtis' funkiest work ever – a record that works as well as a 70s soul album as it does a hip action film score! The track list alone reads as a who's who of 70s funk – filled with gems that include "Pusherman", "Freddie's Dead", "Little Child Runnin' Wild", "Give Me Your Love", and "Superfly" – and the rest of the set is equally great, essential listening throughout!

Phil Upchurch ‎- Upchurch 1969 (Cadet)

An incredible album from one of the greatest talents on the Chicago soul scene of the late 60s – guitarist Phil Upchurch, a player with an amazing sound! Phil could work in worlds that were equal parts soul and psychedelia – making his guitar a perfect accompaniment for the best Chicago soul of Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, Minnie Riperton, and other greats of the time. This album's easily one of Phil's best – a mindblowing set of arrangements put together by the groundbreaking producer Charles Stepney – bringing together bits of jazz, rock, soul, and funk – all providing the perfect genre-blending space for Upchurch to solo! Given that there's no singer on the set, Phil's work on guitar is a lot freer than you're used to hearing – in a really great way, one that puts him in a space somewhere between Shuggie Otis and Jimi Hendrix!

Γεννημένος στον αμερικανικό Νότο στις 3 Μαίου του 1933 ο James Brown έπαιξε το σημαντικότερο ρόλο στη δημιουργία και την εξέλιξη του funk. Οι πλήρεις ενέργειας εμφανίσεις του πήραν διαστάσεις μύθου στις δεκαετίες του '60 και του 70. Η μουσική του πορεία ξεκίνησε στους Gospel Starlighters του Bobby Byrd. Σύντομα το γκρουπ άλλαξε μονοπάτια από gospel σε r&b αλλά και το όνομά του σε The Famous Flames. Τη δεκαετία του '50 υπέγραψαν συμβόλαιο με in Federal/King και γνώρισαν μεγάλη επιτυχία με την μπαλάντα "Please, Please, Please". Στα χρόνια που ακολούθησαν το ύφος του έγινε πιο σκληρό μπολιάζοντας στον ήχο του στοιχεία jazz και latin, ενώ τα ρυθμικά του μέρη έγιναν πιο περίπλοκα.

Σύντομα η φήμη του ως του πιο συναρπαστικού ζωντανού σόου άρχισε να εξαπλώνεται στους μουσικούς κύκλους με ορόσημο το άλμπουμ ''Live At The Apollo" του 1963. Λόγω διαφορών με την King κυκλοφόρησε το "Out Of Sight" (1964) στη Smash Records. To άλμπουμ, αν και δεν μπορούσε να θεωρηθεί funk, είχε όλα τα δομικά στοιχεία που αργότερα οργανώθηκαν συστηματικά στο "Pappa's Got A Brand New Bag" (1965), μέσω του οποίου έγινε ευρέως γνωστός στο λευκό κοινό. To "I Got You (I Feel Good)" που ακολούθησε γνώρισε ακόμα μεγαλύτερη επιτυχία.

A legendary bit of heavy funk from Germany – served up by a cool combo led by drummer Klaus Weiss! The lineup here includes fuzzy guitar, electric piano, and lots of heavy percussion – all served up in a way that's jamming, but a lot more straightforwardly funky than some of the group's contemporaries on the European scene! Ack Van Rooyen plays trumpet, Ferdinand Povel plays tenor and flute, and the production is often very tripped-out – abstracting the jazz roots a bit with some really cool touches.

Guido And Maurizio De Angelis - La Polizia Incrimina, La Legge Assolve 1973 (Beat Records Company)

One of the first great Italian cop movies of the 70s – and a superbly-scored film with a really wonderful soundtrack! The DeAngelis brothers are clearly drawing heavily from an American tradition initiated by Lalo Schfrin – using heavy guitar, funky undercurrents, and even some soulfully righteous touches to really set this one apart from other Italian films of the time. Yet the approach here is also a bit more different, touches with some of the darker modes and more redemptive themes of Italian westerns – a sense of suspension and drama that's incredibly powerful, and heard to best effect on the solo instrumental passages – which include guitar by Maurizio and flute by Guido.

Narassa & Zanagoria ‎- Popfolkmusic 1973 ( International HIFI)

A split set of sound library instrumentals – recorded by two more famous artists, each working here under a pseudonym! Narassa is Sandro Brugnolini – an artist you might know for darker, moodier music on other records – but who turns in some very cool tracks on side one – numbers that definitely live up to the "popfolkmusic" title – in the way that they offer up unusual instrumental twists that echo popular modes of the tune, but in an offbeat way. The side features weird recastings of modes inspired by Bacharach, Donovan, and others – with titles that include "Pop Medioevale", "Gli Anni Del Candore", "Cineclown", and "Fermiamo Il Tramonto". Side two features work by Zanagoria – aka Giorgio Carnini – tunes that make sweet use of keyboards, including piano, electric piano, moog, and organ – used in a range of styles that includes a few especially nice funky tracks!

Moe Koffman ‎– Moe's Curried Soul 1970 (Kama Sutra)

Moe Koffman was a Canadian jazz musician who played not only the flute but also rocked the sax and clarinet (just like our very own Trampy). Having established his reputation as a talented flautist in the late 1950s and 1960s, Moe's Curried Soul saw Koffman move from straight-up jazz into the world of fusion. Released in 1969 on Karma Sutra records, Curried Soul is a funk/soul/jazz explosion. The title track is the winner here, funky and jazzy in equal measure. If you can tolerate jazz flute you'll surely find a lot to like – great guitar, nice horn section and (presumably to justify the "curried" part of the title) just a tickle of sitar ... all of which builds to a satisfyingly cosmic finale. The rest of the album has a definite 1970s Sesame Street vibe going on (particularly the cover of You Are My Sunshine which jars somewhat as it immediately follows Curried Soul) but Koffman's covers of High Heel Sneakers and Cantelope Island are worth a listen.By Trampy and the Tramp

This double LP by Sandro Brugnolini under the pseudonym of Narassa, is a mix of funk and progressive rock with drums, electric guitar, organ and flute lead the way. Recorded in early 70’s there are clear references to those who at the time was the international rock and prog standard, but clearly all reread and interpreted in the Italian style that distinguished us.
